A Review of Fox River Mariposa Crew Socks
Fox River is a company that has been leading the way with innovative running/athletic socks and continues to grow its line of product options. Their products are all guaranteed by the manufacturer for one year. They are also making big changes to reduce their energy efficiency and environmental footprint as a company.
I’m always looking for lightweight but warm yet breathable socks to wear when I run in the winter in Alaska. Running on snow and ice or uneven terrain/trails usually requires sturdier, high quality socks that can handle movements without sliding down on me. This season I’ve had the chance to test out the Fox River Adventure Cross Terrain Women’s Mariposa Crew sock.
The Mariposa Crew boasts some of the most advanced construction features I’ve found in a runner-friendly sock. For example, “hydrophobic and hydrophilic spiraled channels of yarn” move moisture away from skin. The contoured rib top is made of spandex and elastic which holds the sock in place without slipping/sliding down. Fox River utilizes wick dry technology so even though these socks are warm, they’re also breathable, and don’t run the risk of hot spots or blisters. Vented panels help to remove moisture. The fabric arch support is a noted benefit for more strenuous activities. The sole, heel and toes have extra fabric reinforcements, but are still lightweight enough to easily wear in your running shoes without crowding. The socks stretch to sit just below knee level.
The Mariposa Crew is a blend of 40% nylon, 29% Merino wool, 29% acrylic, and 2% spandex. Merino wool is a special fine grade of wool that is soft, not prone to itching reactions, and comfortable while still containing the odor control and thermoregulation aspects of regular wool. The spandex component helps the sock maintain its shape even after numerous washings, and adds extra arch support for the material. I found that the material did not fade in color despite lots of use and trips to the laundry basket. The heel and toe are reinforced with nylon for extra comfort and protection. Care instructions are to turn the socks inside out before washing and drying, and that did the trick for maintaining the color and shape.
I absolutely love the pattern design! These socks got a lot of compliments from friends. They were in my winter running bag but also snuck onto my feet to wear in my boots for everyday use on several occasions. 5 color options make these an easy style accessory, with options of red, purple, lyons blue, khaki, and black.
- Color options/design
- Lightweight and breathable yet warm
- Durable, maintained shape despite many washings
- Socks stayed in place while running on trails and pavement
Pricing in at around 14 dollars MSRP, I was very pleased with the value of this product. I’ve certainly paid the same ballpark for thin summer running socks that have a fraction of the comfort, material and quality. The Mariposa Crew socks are a great bang for your buck!
