A Review of the HydraPak SoftFlask and SpeedCup A Review of the HydraPak SoftFlask and SpeedCup www.runnerclick.com

HydraPak claims that their products are able to withstand the harshest environments.  They believe in their products so much that they provide a “Beyond Lifetime Guarantee”.  Needless to say, they are serious about hydration.  I was lucky enough to get a chance to try out two popular products by the company: the HydraPak SoftFlask and the HydraPak SpeedCup.  My training is kicking into high gear for a spring race, so with long runs on the calendar, I was happy to try out some serious hydration products.  But did I love them?  Read on to find out.

HydraPak SoftFlask

Soft flasks are an excellent replacement for the standard hard plastic water bottles.  When you are out running pretty far, it’s good to be able to have a bottle that will pack away after use.  Simply roll it up and forget about it.  These light hydration devices are becoming a big thing, especially with long distance runners.

This 250ml SoftFlask is PVC/BPA free flask and about as long as a regular sized water bottle.  It is a cheery bright blue with their signature rain drop logo on the body.  The body is very thin and easy to grip if you do want to hold it rather than place it in a vest or belt.  It is made of an ultra durable, abrasion resistant TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) & RF welded seams.

This is a super lightweight flask.  It is 23g (.8oz) so no worries that this baby is adding much weight to your pack. Also, this flask fits into most belts, vests, soft pocket holder and even PFDs (personal flotation devices).

Like many soft flasks, this has a bite valve that is easy to clean and easy to use.  It is made out of a soft silicon. The lazy girl in me doesn’t even remove it from my hydration vest pocket, but rather brings the mouthpiece straight to my mouth for a quick sip.  (Warning: Make sure you release the bite valve from your teeth before pulling your mouth off.  You might get a spray of water in your face.  Not that I would know.)

Not only is it for water but it works great with drink mixes and will even hold up to 8 gels.  If you don’t want to carry gels with you, simply pour right into the flask and voila! Gel dispenser! Personally the idea of 8 gels in a squeeze bag makes my stomach turn (I never eat that many gels anyway), but for those of you who like to down gels like water, I could see how it would be super handy.  However, I did get to try out NUUN and Tailwind in the flask and both worked out great. It’s also worth mentioning that there was no plastic/silicone taste from the water bottle itself.

The soft body allows it to fit into nearly any slot, be it a side pocket of a back pack or the pocket of a vest.  I slid it into my Ultimate Direction Vesta and it worked out just fine.

Bonus: it’s top rack dishwasher friendly (again, I’m lazy).  It also can hold hot liquids (if you dig drinking warm drinks on your long runs) and can go into the freezer to freeze liquids for those hot summer runs.

HydraPak-HydraFlask-Review

I appreciated that the whole body of the flask was bendable, including the part closest to the mouth piece.  My other flask is hard near the mouthpiece, so when folding it up, I have to consider that.  Without the hard piece at the top, it allows you to completely roll up the flask and slide it in your pocket or vest compartment. However, it was a little more difficult to twist the mouthpiece off since I had no extra leverage with that hard plastic part around the mouthpiece.  But once the mouthpiece is on, it will not leak or spill.

As mentioned before, HydraPak has gone one step “beyond” to make sure you are happy with their product with their “Beyond Lifetime Guarantee”. If you ever have any problems with their products, they will replace it or repair it, no questions asked. Needless to say, they believe in their product so much and after using it, I see why.  The price is also reasonable.  For this size, it comes in at $14.

Bottom Line

Did I love it?  You bet. I highly recommend this flask especially for ultra runners who need to carry a lot on a long run and want to keep their packs light and roomy.

For those of you who don’t do “milliliters”, the 250ml comes out to 8.5oz, so you get a good size serving in the flask.  For longer runs though, I would suggest one of their larger sizes.  They have four additional sizes: 150ml, 300ml, 450ml and 600ml.  Both the 450ml and 600ml come with a removable and adjustable “drink tube” which essentially is a straw that extends the mouthpiece.  But you can use it just like the 250ml with just the bite mouthpiece.

If you are looking for a reliable hydration vessel (or gel vessel) for your next run, definitely check out the HydraPak SoftFlask.  They guarantee it’ll be great.

HydraPak SpeedCup

HydraPak SpeedCup

Imagine yourself running a race where you have to bring your own cup.  Stay with me.  Imagine if all the racers were required to do so.  Would everyone be carrying around water bottles?  Not necessarily. Whether you’ve signed up for a cup less race or perhaps want to forgo the usual hydration belt/vest/handheld, check out the HydraPak SpeedCup.

This ultra lightweight, collapsible cup is a simple yet useful invention. Not only is it meant for running, but is a great thing to have on a camping trip when trying to pack light.

But this was not originally designed for your every day run or generic race.  Cup less races are a thing and will probably become more prevalent as time goes on. Ever heard of UTMB?  UTMB is a 103 mile mountain ultra marathon that scales the Alps in three different countries and is a cup less event. These cups were created specifically for it.

The silicon body is 100% PVC and BPA free.  Made of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) it is super lightweight, 10g or .3 oz.  They come in a 4 pack, each a different color: Malibu Blue, Mojave Orange, Sequoia Green and Mammoth Grey.  The integrated finger loops provides extra security so you don’t lose your cup while on the go.

They are top-rack dishwasher safe for easy cleaning and can be filled with hot water or frozen.  For a pack of four, they will run you $20.

As with their other gear, it is protected by the “Beyond Lifetime Guarantee”. If you ever run into a HydraPak problem, they will fix it or replace it for you.

Bottom Line

This is a specialized tool.  I have not participated in any event that requires you to bring your own cup, but that doesn’t mean I won’t and when I do, I’ll definitely grab this.  For now, I will be using this for camping trips.  It definitely is an eco-friendly option and super lightweight.  Crumple it up. Put in your pocket.  Done. If you are in need of a lightweight cup set for camping or if you do decide to participate in a cup less event, definitely grab a pack of SpeedCups by HydraPak.
