Salomon X-Scream 3D Facts

With 3D Fit, 3D Ride and 3D Grip the Salomon X-Scream 3D is Salomon’s most agile running and trail shoe to date.

Unless you’ve had your head in the sand or under a badly placed rock, you will know that Salomon has the trail and mountain running market in the bag but over the last few years they’ve set their sights on another market; the hybrid shoe or CityTrail, that performs well in mixed conditions.

Taking everything they know about trail and mountain training and packing it into a shoe made for the road, Salomon have created the X-Scream 3D, an all surface grip running shoe perfect for exploring new paths. The versatile shoe comfortably switches ‘door to trail’ and is suitable for newbies, casual runners and those who have been pounding the streets and trails for years.

The brand stays true to their slogan “Freedom, Action, Sports” designing shoes for the adventurer and risk taker with maximum comfort and protection in mind.

Pros
  • The quick lace system is simple yet effective for easy-on and off
  • The grip of the shoe performs well on wet and muddy surfaces and works well on tarred surfaces too
  • The shoe is responsive and according to some runners is consistent on uneven surfaces
  • The shoe is available in several colorway options
Cons
  • As far as the fit goes some runners felt it was a little too tight
  • The shoe is on the heavy side for some
Outsole
Outsole

Outsole

Because the Salomon X-Scream 3D is designed for different terrains the outsole uses CONTAGRIP technology, which delivers solid and reliable traction, especially for runners taking on wet or muddy surfaces. Salomon’s IS Tendon System that performs in the same way as an actual tendon provides flexibility and balance, ensuring a smooth heel to toe transition.
Midsole
Midsole

Midsole

Designed for comfort, the midsole of the Salomon X-Scream 3D makes use of the full length injected EVA for superior cushioning underfoot. Together with the Salomon LT Muscle, this is designed for effective shock absorption while running, providing additional cushioning when necessary.
Upper
Upper

Upper

The upper is an open mesh that makes for a more breathable shoe and lightweight coverage. The material is quick drying and the Sensiflex fabric allows expansion of the foot for a better fit. There is a rubber toe cap that protects the toes from bruising and the Sensifit overlays, which wrap the foot also contributes to the comfort of the shoe. The quick lacing system adds a convenient element and there is a lace pocket where you can tuck the laces into for the run.
Weight
Weight

Weight

According to some runners the weight of the shoe is heavy, but they also mentioned they were used to running in minimalist, zero drop shoes and racers, which average around 6-7 oz. The Salomon X-Scream 3D is about 8.9 oz but it makes no apologies for the additional weight; it’s not built for speed and does what it’s designed to do: provide a supportive ride with the necessary support and comfort across different surfaces.
Comfort
Comfort

Comfort

All the design elements come together to create a very comfortable shoe; the well-padded and ventilated upper and the well-fitting sock liner, the midsole with its cushioning, the ankle height and the all-in-one tongue. However, depending on who you speak to there’s a discrepancy between the cut of the size of the shoe. Some say it’s about a half size smaller than normal whereas others have said the shoe is too big.

Style

If you consider yourself a bit of a wallflower and don't like too much attention then you need to avoid these at all costs. Salomon’s are known for their striking colors and the X-Scream 3D is no different. They're available in various colorway combinations including Granny Green/Union Blue/Black, Stone Blue/Black/Boss Blue and for ladies; Lotus Pink/Black/Granny Green, Papaya/Lotus Pink/Flashy and Firefly Green/Wasabi/Hot Pink. You're not going to go unnoticed.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness

Responsiveness

These have been described as an all-round performer that delivers a durable, responsive ride on both the pavement and smooth dirt. The mesh upper features Endofit, an internal sleeve attached to the tongue that hugs the foot for improved response. Some runners have mentioned the shoes having good ‘toe off’ and ‘foot strike’ and liked the bounce, while others when comparing them to their more traditional running shoes said they couldn’t ‘feel the road’ as much as they would have liked to.
Terrain
Terrain

Terrain

Salomon started off manufacturing shoes made for more extreme adventures and have moved into the running market. The X-Scream 3D is referred to as a ‘door to trail' shoe, made for urban runs that include road and easy trails, as well as muddy or wet conditions. The shoe has been designed to take on the elements comfortably but with a rugged construction that would be associated with off-road running.
Traction
Traction

Traction

The Salomon X-Scream features CONTAGRIP; a uniquely designed outsole with different densities. It's this technology that provides good traction across all surfaces and the 3D grip gives the shoe multi-directional traction on rough surfaces. If' you're a runner that takes to the road regardless of rain, snow or sleet you are going to want, and need a running shoe with good traction. That's where a trail shoe is your best bet, and the Salomon Scream is a great choice.
Stablity
Stablity

Stablity

We felt that this was one of the better shoes with regards to its stability but we also felt that considering it's a city-trail shoe it should be. Salomon shoes are known for their stability and support and they've incorporated this into the X-Scream running shoe. Over and above the multi-directional lugs on the outsole, there is also a thin TPU film layer for added stability. Stability is definitely one of the shoes strongest features.
Drop
Drop

Drop

A few runners mentioned the drop being a bit on the high side and if the measurements are anything to go by then it's a given that it is: 13mm in forefoot, 23mm in the heel and a net drop of 10mm. There were however runners who reported that the drop doesn't feel as high as it actually is.

Bottom Line
Bottom Line

Bottom Line

During the review process we put the Salomon X-Scream 3D through its paces to make sure we covered all the bases and we have to agree: it's a neutral running shoe that provides excellent traction and stability on different surfaces, even icy conditions like snow and sleet. The shoe's construction and design is reliable and runners report they get a lot of miles of out of them.

As is always the case with reviews we found runners who loved the Salomon X-Scream 3D but there were a few who found the shoe too heavy and too narrow.
