Instead of buying a beginning board, and then upgrading, you can get the two for one deal. And the best part it, this type of board is all once piece, so you won’t go toppling over and crashing down.

This baby can take up to 350 pounds of weight, so needless to say, it is top quality. A disc shaped board, this one leaves you free to gyrate like Elvis. The three settings are transitioned between easily, and over slants of 15, 17, or 20 degrees. This is for serious, heavy users.
The different angles give you options for just how much core you want to work on. The benefit of the disc shaped balance board is that it should help you from completely wiping out, although on those tougher setting, I might move away from the China cabinet. Work your way to the hardest level, or keep it on an easier setting after your long run.
This is a solid middle of the road price. With the three different settings, the Fitter First Pro is an amazing value for anyone who already knows how to balance, but might want to advance their core and balance skills. Pricing further depends on what height/size you decide to go with.

The Different Types of Balance Boards

Some balance boards are built for general balance, improved balance for sports or rehabilitation–while others are built to improve balance and skills for certain sports like surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding.
There are many different styles and types of balance boards to choose from but it is best to choose one based on your skills level, long-term balance goals and reasons for wanting to improve your balance. These are the six different categories of balance boards from which you can choose from.
A Teeter Board: Teeter Boards sit on a stable base such as a cylinder cut in half, 2 balls cut in half or a wedge. These boards are not very challenging or fun to use but serve their purpose well for physical therapy, rehabilitation and balance training for the elderly.
Wobble Board: Wobble boards are boards with half of a ball adhered to the bottom. They’re great for general and sports balance training–but their main purpose is for physical therapy/rehabilitation. Wobble boards are quickly mastered, which make them less fun and challenging over time. They can range in price from 20 to 200+ U.S dollars. A cheap 20 dollar wobble board could be used for balance training but if I was going to spend around 150 dollars on a balance device it would on the Indo board original.
Roller: Rockers are the most commonly used balance boards by many athletes. They are used by putting the tube under a board and balancing on it. This type of board has the broadest range of applications– from rehab and general balance improvement to sports specific training, board sports balance training and doing practicing trick techniques. However, there are better boards out there if you are specifically looking to improve performance in skateboarding, surfing, or snowboarding.
Size is the main things to look for when purchasing one of these boards–the shorter the board the more challenging it will. It’s also important to see if the board has stoppers on the ends of it; boards without stoppers are more likely to shoot out from under you. However, stoppers do limit tricks that can be performed with them. Roller boards are a lot of fun to use once you get the basics down, the best roller board out there is the Indo board original.
Roller with Rails: The roller with rails balance board has a track on the bottom of the board and a roller with a channel cut out in the middle of it so it can sit in the track. The track has several purposes: it prevents the board from shooting out from under you, allows you to do flip tricks with the board, and simulates that carving feel in board sports. One thing to keep in mind is the shape and size–this is because these features will make the board behave differently.
This type of balance board is best for skateboarders and snowboarders looking to improve at their sport–it allows them to practice flips and tricks and simulates the carving feeling they are used to. These boards are more challenging to use then roller boards due to the nature of the rail system–however, they can be introduced as you progress and are great for any person who wishes to train further.
Rollers with rails take a bit to get used to, but once you do they are a fun and challenging balance board. While there is more risk of injury if you are trying to work on flip tricks, they are effective and efficient in their purpose. Vew-Do is the most well known and reviewed brands that offer many different types of roller with rail boards to meet your specific needs.
Parallel Roller: Parallel rollers are the least common type of balance board. It is unique because it uses a pipe the length of the board–and the board is placed on top of the pipe. Most are marketed specifically to surfers to improve their balance. It also simulates the feel of riding a surfboard better than a roller board. However, this type of board will benefit any person looking to improve and is forgiving to beginners because you don’t sit so high off the even ground’s surface–so you don’t have to worry about the board shooting out from under you.
The Goof board is perfect for long-board surfers and skaters looking for a balance board to practice their footwork on. Snowboarders can benefit from it as well but would probably be better off with a View-do roller with rail balance board.
360 Degrees of balance: 360-degree balance boards sit on top of a ball and has rails under the board to keep from rolling off the board. These boards are the most challenging and provide a great workout out. While they aren’t the most fun to use, they are effective for advanced users and help improve your performance in sports like surfing. These boards are also the most expensive, ranging from 300 to 1000 U.S dollars. Unless you are a semi-professional or professional athlete these may not be worth the price for some of you.
Others: There are many other types of balance board that doesn’t fit the above descriptions. They are highly popular and equally good training devices. The Vew-Do company is a company that has boards that fall in this category. Their Nub is a curved board that sits on the floor– you can rock it back and forth, practice carving, and work on flipping tricks with it. It was made specifically to help snowboarders and skateboarders improve their skills from the comfort of their own home. Reviews demonstrated The Nub is very versatile–even children and beginners can use it without fear of falling off.
Balance boards with and without stoppers on the bottom of the boards can shoot out from under you and be launched into the air with such high velocity they can easily damage walls, smash through windows, bust up TVs, explode fine china or knock out a spectators teeth. They are meant to be used in an area where a flying board cannot do any damage–so make sure you have ample space around you. Also, keep in mind that most balances board should not be used on concrete because it will put more wear and tear on them.
Also, consider that indoor flooring, like hardwood and linoleum, can be damaged easily. Even when using a balance board correctly there are going to be times when it comes slamming down into the ground, which may eventually damage the flooring. It is recommended you use a piece of old carpet or an area rug while training on your balance board to help prevent damage to the flooring and the balance board. The banging sound a balance board makes when slamming into the floor may be annoying to people that live below you–so keep this in mind if you live in an apartment complex or second floor.
Q. What surface is best for using my balance board?
Balance boards are usable on most flat surfaces, like carpet or hardwood floors, although you may want to lay down a protective mat if you’re worried about damaging your floors or your balance board.
Q. How often should I use my balance board?
The more you train with your balance board the more balance, stability, and coordination you gain. Ten to fifteen or at most twenty minutes is the ideal timing session per day.
Q. I’ve never used a balance board. Is it safe, even for beginners?
Just like other exercise equipment, a balance board does come with risks, but as long as you’re using it safely and according to the instructions you should be fine. Make sure the area where you’re using your board is open and free of any obstacles or debris and is well-lit. Stretch beforehand and consider using the board barefoot or with a pair of grip socks–this allows you to react quickly and more intuitively to the movement of the board.
