10 Best Balance Boards Reviewed

last updated May 29, 2019
Runners use all kinds of training tools to make sure they are constantly growing and improving as athletes. We also use training tools to strengthen our bodies and prevent injuries. Running, and athletic endeavors in general, put a strain on our bodies—and sometimes we don’t even feel the effects until it is too late! One great tool that is well loved by runners when it comes to training is the balance board.

Balance boards are a fantastic way to improve your balance, dexterity, reaction times, posture, and to generally improve your muscle and core strength over time. Many people say they see a noticeable difference in either how they feel or in their performance during their preferred sport within as little as a month. And it’s as easy as devoting 10 minutes every day to training with a balance board.

Pros:

High quality

Cool look

Smooth function

Cons:

Expensive

With a beautiful design, the Indo Board Original is amazingly highly rated by customers who have bought it. In addition to the sleek look, it is well made and rolls smoothly on the “virtually indestructible” roller it comes with.

Design/ Specialty
This is a flat oval which rests on the roller without a track or other form of attachment. It has a little texture added to the top so that you won’t slip off. The oval design means you won’t accidentally damage furniture or yourself with sharp edges, and you get to feel like a surfer catching the waves!

Functionality/ Use
Indo Board has a smooth function that doesn’t get caught up or hitched on anything. Sure, this means it could all come crashing down, but that just makes it that much more exciting! There are consequences for not maintaining the core; if there’s no danger there, how can you expect to improve? It’s not exactly for beginners, but once you get the hang of it you might be replacing your couch with a set of Indo Boards.

Cost and Value
It has a relatively high cost, but the quality is second to none. This is not going to snap on you, and it looks great even when the kids keep leaving it out on the living room floor. If you want the best of the best, and don’t mind paying a few bucks extra, here you go.

Pros:

Inexpensive

Adjustable for to difficulty levels

Cons:

Not as advanced

When you are a beginner, you want to make sure you can jump right into your strength training on a balance board. And if you have never used a wobble board before, why spend tons of money on one? Isokinetics Deluxe offers you a beginning level option for the right price.

Design/ Specialty
Disc-shaped, this option adjusts so you can make it more difficult as you get better. There is a removable half-ball under the disc, that when attached, gives more wobble room and therefore makes the core workout harder. Instead of buying a beginner board, and then upgrading, you can get the two for one deal. And the best part is it is all one piece, so you won’t go toppling over and crashing down.

Functionality/ Use
A 360-degree workout, you can tilt forward, back, and side to side, making sure it hits every muscle group in your body. This gives you more options for what to work, stretch, or strengthen, compared to the tilt boards which seesaw over an axis.

Cost and Value
The Isokinetics Deluxe Board is much more affordable than other options. Plus you get the two for one design which adjusts to become more difficult! If is what you are after is value, thinking maybe you don’t need all the jazziness of a more expensive product, this will not disappoint.

Cons:

Not adjustable

It’s lightweight, sturdy, and made of wood. The Profitness wooden is a disc-shaped piece of equipment that looks good, and can easily be transported or slipped into a closet. But if it does get left out, it really doesn’t look too bad.

Design/ Specialty
A pretty basic design here, this is your standard, straightforward, disk-shaped. No frills or even really special features, but sometimes that is all you need. It tilts, it wobbles, and it strengthens the core.

Functionality/ Use
If you are carrying around a few extra pounds, this board will be easy to use and support your weight. It is definitely geared towards beginners, but most definitely still gives you that great core workout and muscle stretch you need!

Cost and Value
Basic board means low price. And the best part is, the low price on this ProFitness doesn’t mean low quality.

Criteria Used for Evaluation

Materials

Why should one consider the design or specialty of the balance board? Athletes and users who have used, or know about, balance boards are aware of everything they have to offer. Whether you want to improve your balance, encourage healing, prevent injuries, or improve your overall stamina–using a balance board that was designed for your specialty will give you the best results.

After checking the composition of the board, the user should equally consider knowing up to what weight the balance board can hold. This is especially important because overloading the board can cause injury–so it should be able to at least hold your body weight. A good balance board will be able to hold up to at least 350 pounds–however, users can get customizable boards if they need a board that can hold more than 350.

Like everything in life, balance boards have both advantages and disadvantages. While the advantages far outweigh the negatives it is important to note the importance of proper grounding. While balance boards can help you lose weight, and improve your balance, it can easily cause injury if you decide to use it on unsafe or inadequate surfaces.

Construction is important when choosing a balance board. A good board should be durable, smooth, and comfortable for its users. Different people have different needs–which is why there are several options out there. Most balance boards will be made of wood because it offers great support and durability, but there are a few reliable plastic options out there as well. It’s important the board can sustain your weight and half an inch is the advisable thickness for balance boards.

Weight

Value

Balance boards will vary in cost depending on the type, size, design, specialized purpose, and place of purchase. More expensive doesn’t always mean higher quality, but it is a good idea to still compare prices and features to make sure you’re getting the most out of whatever you decide to buy. Also, consider how your balance board can be used along with your current workout routine and the equipment you are already using.

Versatility

Balance boards have many purposes aside from improving your balance. They will also improve your stability, reaction speed, and overall awareness–which are all important to improving both your health and performance. Many balance boards offer several different features, so it is important to narrow down what you need in order to find something that fits the bill. You may get more use out of a balance board that can be used in multiple exercises, or that has features that cater to your preferred sport.

Style

Balance boards help you develop your balance while also being fun to use–but it is important to find one specifically suited for your own goals. Some balance boards are built for general balance, improved balance for sports or rehabilitation–while others are built to improve balance and skills for certain sports like surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding.

There are many different styles and types of balance boards to choose from but it is best to choose one based on your skills level, long-term balance goals and reasons for wanting to improve your balance. These are the six different categories of balance boards from which you can choose from.

A Teeter Board: Teeter Boards sit on a stable base such as a cylinder cut in half, 2 balls cut in half or a wedge. These boards are not very challenging or fun to use but serve their purpose well for physical therapy, rehabilitation and balance training for the elderly.

Wobble Board: Wobble boards are boards with half of a ball adhered to the bottom. They’re great for general and sports balance training–but their main purpose is for physical therapy/rehabilitation. Wobble boards are quickly mastered, which make them less fun and challenging over time. They can range in price from 20 to 200+ U.S dollars. A cheap 20 dollar wobble board could be used for balance training but if I was going to spend around 150 dollars on a balance device it would on the Indo board original.

Roller: Rockers are the most commonly used balance boards by many athletes. They are used by putting the tube under a board and balancing on it. This type of board has the broadest range of applications– from rehab and general balance improvement to sports specific training, board sports balance training and doing practicing trick techniques. However, there are better boards out there if you are specifically looking to improve performance in skateboarding, surfing, or snowboarding.

Size is the main things to look for when purchasing one of these boards–the shorter the board the more challenging it will. It’s also important to see if the board has stoppers on the ends of it; boards without stoppers are more likely to shoot out from under you. However, stoppers do limit tricks that can be performed with them. Roller boards are a lot of fun to use once you get the basics down, the best roller board out there is the Indo board original.

Roller with Rails: The roller with rails balance board has a track on the bottom of the board and a roller with a channel cut out in the middle of it so it can sit in the track. The track has several purposes: it prevents the board from shooting out from under you, allows you to do flip tricks with the board, and simulates that carving feel in board sports. One thing to keep in mind is the shape and size–this is because these features will make the board behave differently.

This type of balance board is best for skateboarders and snowboarders looking to improve at their sport–it allows them to practice flips and tricks and simulates the carving feeling they are used to. These boards are more challenging to use then roller boards due to the nature of the rail system–however, they can be introduced as you progress and are great for any person who wishes to train further.

Rollers with rails take a bit to get used to, but once you do they are a fun and challenging balance board. While there is more risk of injury if you are trying to work on flip tricks, they are effective and efficient in their purpose. Vew-Do is the most well known and reviewed brands that offer many different types of roller with rail boards to meet your specific needs.

Parallel Roller: Parallel rollers are the least common type of balance board. It is unique because it uses a pipe the length of the board–and the board is placed on top of the pipe. Most are marketed specifically to surfers to improve their balance. It also simulates the feel of riding a surfboard better than a roller board. However, this type of board will benefit any person looking to improve and is forgiving to beginners because you don’t sit so high off the even ground’s surface–so you don’t have to worry about the board shooting out from under you.

The Goof board is perfect for long-board surfers and skaters looking for a balance board to practice their footwork on. Snowboarders can benefit from it as well but would probably be better off with a View-do roller with rail balance board.

360 Degrees of balance: 360-degree balance boards sit on top of a ball and has rails under the board to keep from rolling off the board. These boards are the most challenging and provide a great workout out. While they aren’t the most fun to use, they are effective for advanced users and help improve your performance in sports like surfing. These boards are also the most expensive, ranging from 300 to 1000 U.S dollars. Unless you are a semi-professional or professional athlete these may not be worth the price for some of you.

Start Slow and Then Grow

It is important, as with any workout routine, to start slow and build as you go. If you have never been on a balance board before you will want to take steps to make sure you are safe and to reduce your chances of falling. As you get better you can do harder moves and routines and improve your workout. But if you try to do too much too fast you can hurt yourself.

Value is More Than Price

When you are looking for a nw balance board, it can be tempting to just buy the cheapest board you find. But this is not always a good idea because investing in a more expensive board upfront can save you money in the long run. You wont have too upgrade to new boards as often and they will be more durable and reliable in the long run. It can also affect how good your woroout results are. So consider the price but do not let it be your deciding factor on what board you choose.

Other Factors to Consider

Protection

Balance boards with and without stoppers on the bottom of the boards can shoot out from under you and be launched into the air with such high velocity they can easily damage walls, smash through windows, bust up TVs, explode fine china or knock out a spectators teeth. They are meant to be used in an area where a flying board cannot do any damage–so make sure you have ample space around you. Also, keep in mind that most balances board should not be used on concrete because it will put more wear and tear on them.

Also, consider that indoor flooring, like hardwood and linoleum, can be damaged easily. Even when using a balance board correctly there are going to be times when it comes slamming down into the ground, which may eventually damage the flooring. It is recommended you use a piece of old carpet or an area rug or a yoga mat while training on your balance board to help prevent damage to the flooring and the balance board. The banging sound a balance board makes when slamming into the floor may be annoying to people that live below you–so keep this in mind if you live in an apartment complex or second floor.

q: I’ve never used a balance board. Is it safe, even for beginners?

a:

Just like other exercise equipment, a balance board does come with risks, but as long as you’re using it safely and according to the instructions you should be fine. Make sure the area where you’re using your board is open and free of any obstacles or debris and is well-lit. Stretch beforehand and consider using the board barefoot or with a pair of grip socks–this allows you to react quickly and more intuitively to the movement of the board. If you are especially worried about falls or injury, maybe consider wearing protective gear like elbow and ankle pads. Also, if you have any health issues make sure you ask your doctor or physical therapist about whether or not it’s safe or constructive for you to use a balance board, especially as part of a physical rehabilitation routine.
