If you are serious about training, you may want to check out the Garmin HRM PRO. Heart rate monitors often get cast aside in favor of a sports smartwatch in many cases. Smartwatches are great and can give you deep insights into your running style as well as track your progress. However, as far as heart monitoring is concerned, they are a little less than accurate.

This heart rate monitor straps right to your chest (close to your heart) and provides more accurate measurements of how your heart reacts during your workout, and can even calculate things such as your VO2 max.

While it works great on its own, the lack of memory requires that it be synced with a Garmin watch or compatible app to benefit from the advanced features offered by this heart rate monitor.

After your workout, this device sends all of this information to your watch or your smartphone where it can offer insights into your running style to help you improve on the trails. It’s like a little personal trainer that can reach inside of your body and tell you where you excel, and what you need to work on.

CONNECTIVITY

This device uses Bluetooth Low Energy and ANT+ connectivity that plays well with all of your devices. Often, Bluetooth devices can be a real energy drain on paired devices, such as watches and smartphones.

What’s unique about Bluetooth Low Energy is that it helps to save on overall battery life. It can achieve this by only activating when certain conditions are met.

If you aren’t doing anything that requires live tracking, the Bluetooth doesn’t kick in. It’s a small difference but can really help extend the overall battery life of paired devices.

It’s also important to note that this device plays well with others. All you need to do is turn your device on, and your watch or smartphone will automatically detect your heart rate monitor. Whether you are using an iPhone or an Android device, this HRM will automatically show up under your “pair Bluetooth device” category under settings.

BATTERY LIFE

There are some serious pros and cons of the battery provided inside of this small and compact HRM. First- the good news.

Even when used every single day, the battery in this design is built to last up to one full year. This means that you won’t need to charge it at the end of every workout or worry about it running out of juice in the middle of a brutal training session.

The bad news? Once this battery dies- it will need to be replaced. It runs off of a single CR2032 lithium coin cell battery, which is the type of battery found in things like bathroom scales. You can pick them up at your local drug store, and a pack of 2 costs less than your morning cup of coffee.

To replace them, you will need to bust out a Phillips head screwdriver and carefully pop out the old and replace it with a new battery. It’s a little time-consuming and tedious, but you will only need to do it at least once per year.

SIZE

What I also love about this unique HRM is that it is small, compact, and incredibly comfortable. It is slim enough to wear under your workout shirt without being noticed. The width of the strap is able to be easily adjusted, and measures to be between 23.5 inches to 42 inches long.

While it works for almost all users, be sure to take measurements of your chest to ensure that you fall within the length window. If you fall outside of the 42-inches, Garmin also offers an extension strap on their store that boosts the width to 56 inches.

This design is also incredibly slim. It measures to be just 1.2 inches wide and .5 inches deep. Weighing in at just 2.1 ounces, you are likely to even forget that you are wearing it.

This slim and comfortable design is not only great for running or cross-training, but it’s also perfect to wear in the pool as well.

ADVANCED FEATURES

When paired with your watch or smartphone, this HRM really shines. It not only tracks your heart rate and VO2 Max, but it also tracks your stride, calories burned, steps, and even ground contact time. When you are finished with your run, you can open the app and examine the strengths and weaknesses of your workout.

If you don’t quite know what you are looking at, the app also provides a detailed breakdown of what these numbers mean and things that you can do to improve. Runners often rely on trial and error to boost their endurance and speed. With the Garmin HRM Pro, the vitals that it tracks takes out all of that guesswork to deliver insights on what you need to do to get better.

What I also love about this device is that it is completely waterproof. This means that you can sweat buckets on long runs in the middle of the rain without worrying about damaging your device.

It has a water rating of 5 ATM, which means that it can withstand depths of about 50 meters. This water rating also means that you can also track your progress in the pool as well.

COMFORT

There are absolutely zero complaints about the overall fit and performance of the straps on this device. They are slim and lightweight and work with just about any body type.

While in use, this strap stays firmly in place and will not slide or slip around even as you get sweaty. It performs well on the track, and even stays firmly in place as you swim as well.

The stretchy material moves with your body like a second skin, and will not cause a deep red indentation in your chest. Overall, the design of this strap gets an A+ from most users that have used this sleek device.

PRICE

The downside of the Garmin HRM Pro is that it is much more expensive than other heart rate monitors out there on the market. However, your basic heart rate monitor provides your heart rate while working out, and that’s it.

This design, however, accurately calculates things such as your steps, calories burned, stride length, and even your VO2 max, and uses that information to give you insights on how to be a better runner.

It may cost quite a bit more than your average HRM, but it does so much more! Overall, I feel like this design from Garmin is well worth every penny.
