Outsole
Outsole

Outsole

As you’ll see written on the outsole of the On Cloud 50/50, it features the patented CloudTec Swiss Engineering technology. This outsole is comprised of a rubber compound that offers good traction, and high wear areas are covered with an additional layer of rubber in order to increase its durability.

The configuration of the outsole is one of the most interesting parts of this road running shoe. It features 16 individual pods that resemble clouds – hence the name. These pods are comprised out of foam and are attached to a Speedboard so as to make a coherent whole. This configuration not only allows for the sole of the shoe to be less bulky, but it also allows greater adaptation of the foamy pods to your individual stride, compared to traditional foam soles.

The tips of these cloud pods are slightly grooved, in order to increase their traction and grip on flat surfaces. Additionally, the individual pods are hollow, so as to lessen the weight of the shoe, while also making the stride as soft and pliable as possible.
Midsole
Midsole

Midsole

The cloud pods as seen in the outsole of the shoe are also an integral element of the midsole, making the visual difference between the two almost insignificant. The pillow-like clouds provide fantastic cushioning and encourage a natural gait cycle.

The Speedboard which we’ve mentioned above is a layer that is sandwiched between the outsole and the resilient EVA foam midsole. Besides serving as a base for the cloud units, it also increases the durability of the shoe and provides integrity and structure to the stride. On top of that, the Speedboard disperses the impact energy evenly throughout the midsole in order to minimize the impact shock and make the ride as comfortable as possible.

On top of the midsole, you’ll find a removable EVA foam sockliner, just in case all the clouds and EVA foam didn’t provide enough cushion for your liking. The sockliner features a simple dotted design with big ON letters in the heel area.
Upper
Upper

Upper

The upper of the On Cloud 50/50 is made out of a breathable antimicrobial engineered mesh material that doesn’t constrain the foot. The upper also features fabric lining, as well as the no-sew overlays at the vamp and in the forefoot area, which give a dose of sturdiness and integrity to the upper, without adding bulk. The midfoot and heel area feature supportive mesh overlays that continue onto the lacing system for added fit customization and stability.

Speaking of the lacing system, it’s another innovative element of the shoe, besides the outsole configuration. This system is called Easy-entry lacing system and it doesn’t require you to tie the shoelaces, because they are stretchy and can be tied and secured so as to make this a slip-on shoe, essentially. The design of the laces makes the entire fit of the shoe completely adaptable without you having to adjust the laces mid-day.

If you’re keen on having traditional laces, there are additional loops that allow you to take off the cable elastic ones and put your preferred laces on the shoe. The tongue of the Cloud 50/50 is thin and soft, so you don’t need to wear socks with this shoe if you don’t want to.
Weight
Weight

Weight

The On brand advertises the Cloud 50/50 as the “world's lightest fully cushioned all-day shoe”. The “fully cushioned” part is what probably makes this statement true because there definitely are shoes that are lighter than this one. However, without being nitpicky about this, it’s worth noting that this road running shoe definitely is in the ultra-lightweight category.

At 230g or 8.1oz for a men’s half-pair and 181g or 6.4oz for women’s, it’s more than probable that you won’t feel in on your feet, no matter how long you run or walk for. The really great thing about the weight of the Cloud 50/50 is that, indeed, cushioning wasn’t sacrificed in the slightest in order to decrease the weight of the shoe, which means that this shoe will be all that more comfortable.
Breathability
Breathability

Breathability

The engineered mesh used in the upper construction of this cushioned running shoe provides an enviable amount of breathability. On top of that, the mesh itself has antimicrobial properties which prevent bacteria from forming inside the shoe box, meaning that even if you do end up sweating a little bit in this shoe, there probably won’t be any odor present.

The inner lining of the shoe is soft and won’t cause sweating or blistering, and the already thin tongue features perforations that make the whole shoebox even more ventilated, with the air being able to flow in and out of the shoe without obstacles.
Comfort
Comfort

Comfort

The best thing about these Swiss-made shoes isn’t their design, but the levels of comfort they provide to the runner. Interestingly enough, comfort is always something that a lot of runners have disagreements on – not in this case. Everyone that has worn the shoe is very excited about the comfort levels it offers.

The On Cloud 50/50 is the kind of shoe you can wear throughout the day without feeling discomfort once. Also, thanks to their very lightweight nature, your feet won’t ever feel pulled down by the sheer weight of the shoe. Additionally, the vast majority of people have stated that the inner lining and material of the shoe is very soft and comfortable.

Some customers even went so far as to claim that this is the most comfortable shoe they’ve ever worn, praising their build, design and light weight. One customer who had issues with plantar fasciitis for a decade stated that this shoe made the condition much more bearable, comparing the difference between wearing other shoes and the Cloud 50/50 “like eating canned and fresh pineapples”.
Style
Style

Style

The On Cloud 50/50 received the last part of its name due to its striking, yet simplistic design. The entire shoe features two distinct color blocks – one from the forefoot to midfoot, and the other from the midfoot to the heel. This makes the entire shoe look instantly fashionable and stylish.

This is also one of the key differences between these and other shoes from the On Cloud line. The design of the shoe is great for everyone that likes to keep it simple and wear one pair of shoes from morning until the evening. The On Cloud 50/50 really is the type of shoe to go perfectly with sportswear, but also with jeans, shorts, pants and even some casual skirts and dresses.

This beautiful shoe comes in three colorways for both men and women. The men’s colorways include Black | Hay, Caramel | Pearl, and Stone | Rust, while the women’s are Grape | Ginger, Mustard | Rose, and Sand | Snow.

The Cloud 50/50 also features reflective details in the rearfoot upper area, as well as a small Swiss flag on the back-right part of the heel counter. Also, you’ll find discreet and recognizable On logo throughout the shoe.
Durability
Durability

Durability

The CloudTec rubber of this road running shoe provides a surprising amount of durability, given that the entire configuration of the outsole looks almost to pliable to not be worn down after the first 100 miles. However, this is far from the truth, and the build quality, as well the quality of each individual compound, makes this a resilient shoe with a delicate look.

The upper, although sleek and uniform-looking, features no-sew overlay reinforcements that prevent the fabric from tearing loose or coming apart. This, combined with the rubber-strengthened high-wear areas of the outsole, make the entire shoe durable and long-lasting.
Protection
Protection

Protection

Even though this shoe is advertised as a very cushioned one, the reality is that this is a moderately cushioned shoe. For someone who just intends to wear it day-to-day and/or run around the block in it, the difference is unimportant. However, if you’re looking for a lightweight long-distance racing shoe, this shoe might not have enough underfoot protection for the last few miles of your run.

That being said, the vast majority of runners have stated that this shoe has never left their feet feeling tired or painful. This isn’t only due to the foamy cloud pods, but also thanks to the CloudTec configuration that facilitates impact absorption and enhances a natural stride.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness

Responsiveness

While the attention is completely on the cushioning of the On Cloud 50/50, the Speedboard to which the cloud pods are attached to also serves the function of dispersing the impact energy, sending it forward towards the forefoot area and using it to create an explosive toe-off. While this level of responsiveness isn’t amazing, it’s more than enough for developing a good amount of speed during a race.
Support
Support

Support

The On Cloud 50/50 is a neutral running shoe that is made for runners who don’t require additional arch support, meaning that people with normal, medium-high and high arches will find them comfortable and suitable.

Moreover, the no-sew reinforcements in the upper provide support to the foot without adding any pressure and constrained feeling. The midfoot overlays that continue onto the lacing system of the shoe also add a layer of support, especially during the lateral movements.
Terrain
Terrain

Terrain

The On Cloud 50/50 is a road running shoe meant for people who move a lot around the city and prefer to walk instead of using transportation. The everyday urban and active people will find that this shoe fits their needs perfectly.

That being said, you can also use this shoe for some serious training, sprints, speed work, running, and interval training. All types of flat surfaces, including pavements, concrete, track and other, are suitable for the Cloud 50/50.

However, this shoe isn’t made for trails and off-road walks, not only because it lacks the protective properties of trail shoes, but also because the stones and pebbles get stuck between the cloud pods in the outsole.
Price
Price

Price

The price of this stylish shoe isn’t cheap, but it’s fairly reasonable. This is true especially if you don’t intend to wear the shoe solely for training and running purposes, but also for walks and doing daily chores. Are there cheaper high-quality neutral road running shoes? Yes. Are they as comfortable and good looking? Hardly.
Traction
Traction

Traction

The flex grooves located on the tips of the cloud pods offer good traction of flat surfaces, along with the grippy properties of the rubber itself. Some runners have even commented that this shoe performs well and offers satisfactory traction on slightly wet roads, but that depends on a lot of factors. This is essentially a running shoe made for dry surfaces, and our advice is to use it on such surfaces.
Flexibility
Flexibility

Flexibility

The engineered mesh is elastic so that it can accommodate and adapt to your feet even after you’ve walked for the entire day and your feet are swollen. Needless to say, the individual cloud pods make the entire sole extremely flexible, and the whole outsole configuration encourages a smooth and flexible heel-to-toe transition.
Stability
Stability

Stability

The lining inside the shoe plays an important role in the overall stability, which is something you don’t find every day. It is comprised of a material that has non-slip properties, meaning that your foot won’t slip forward or move that much at all inside the shoe box and that the heel slippage will be minimized as well.

The vast majority of customers commented that the shoe feels stable and steady. This is mainly because of the V-shaped heel which provides a snug and secure fit that adds stability to each stride.
Drop
Drop

Drop

The heel stack height of the On Cloud 50/50 measures 24mm, while the forefoot stack height measures 18mm. This creates a 6mm offset, which aims at all types of strikers: heel, midfoot, and forefoot strikers alike. This is especially true if the shoe is used for walking – the forefoot strikers might still find the heel getting in the way of their natural stride if they run in the shoe, and might need to opt for a zero-drop shoe instead.

Bottom Line
Bottom Line

Bottom Line

The only thing that bothered people who bought the On Cloud 50/50 was the fact that the outsole configuration gets stones stuck in them if they steer off-road. Everything else left a more than positive impression. This shoe is lightweight, extremely comfortable, cushioned, responsive, and very stylish – what more can an urban runner want?
