Suit Up: Half Marathon Run Lands Woman a Guinness World Record

In May, Karoline Skatteboe attempted to beat the women’s world record, not for the fastest half marathon, but for fastest half wearing a suit. Dressed from head to ankle in business attire, the Cambridge woman, beat the previous standing record with an impressed 1:29:14 finish. She, of course, donned running shoes to tackle the record. We still can’t imagine running 13.1 miles on a hot day in a stifling suit.

Teen Runner Attacked in Saskatoon 

The recent attack on a young male runner has sparked conversations about running safety. Local area police remarked that while running-related assaults were few and far between statistics on this type of attack are not necessarily tracked. 

NASA Inspired Running Shoes

The new Adidas Solarboost shoes are said to be inspired by NASA technology. The tech is mainly seen in the construction of the upper which features Tailored Fibre Placement technology. The idea is that runners get support and hold without added weight making it lighter than the Adidas Energy Boost.

Fitbit Introduces Period Tracking

No longer will women need to download a separate app to track ‘that time of the month.’ Fitbit’s app will notify female users (13 & up) of the update, and they can choose to opt-in. The update includes period tracking that can be viewed on compatible Fitbit devices as well as additional content related to female reproductive health. A new community group will also be created to allow female users to chat about a variety of women’s health topics.

Cardio For Addiction Treatment?

In health-related news, it turns out there’s new research that suggests that cardio workouts could help treat addiction. If you’re familiar with the running world, you’re likely aware that there are more than a few success stories about runners who have swapped a dangerous drug or alcohol addiction for the less destructive habit of running. Studies have shown that cardio’s mental health benefits don’t just stop at decreasing anxiety and depression. Aerobic exercise has been shown to help reduce the risk of relapse for a number of addictions. This new research paves the way towards further investigations into whether aerobic exercise could be used in treatment for addiction. 

Asics to Team Up With Disney

The running shoe and apparel company, Asics, is teaming up with Disney in a campaign to encourage families to be more active. The campaign dubbed “I Move Me” ties in with the June 2018 release of Disney-Pixar’s The Incredibles 2. Asics will be releasing Incredibles 2 inspired workout videos.

Health News: Supplements & Heart Health

New research may have you reconsidering the money you’re spending on health supplements. It turns out that the heart-protecting benefits of supplements may be exaggerated. The study, which investigated previous trials and research concluded that many of the commonly consumed supplements didn’t have a conclusive benefit over heart health. The takeaway? Save your money and get a variety of nutrients from your food, not an expensive bottle of pills.

Protein: Too Much of a Good Thing?

Has eating food ever been easy? Eating healthy seems to get more complicated as time goes on. A new study from the American Heart Association found that high-protein diets (regardless of whether the protein is animal or plant-based) are linked to higher risk of heart disease. Though, dairy and animal protein carry the most significant risk of heart-related death. What to do about these findings? Runners tend to worry and fret over protein intake, but North Americans typically consume more than the recommended daily intake of protein. But everything in moderation.

Cabot Trail Running Race: Finish Line Drunk Driver

The Cabot Trail Race took place recently in Nova Scotia, Canada. The race, which hosts more than 1,000 runners, is a scenic relay race. Last weekend, a drunk driver found herself on the course driving in the opposite direction of traffic near the finish area. Thankfully, no runners were injured in the incident, and the woman was arrested and charged.   While drivers should undoubtedly be responsible and respect races in progress this story is a lesson for runners. Even when a race course is closed to traffic, always be aware of your surroundings.
