Criteria Used for Evaluation

Materials

All running gear is designed to be used while on the go. Motion is key to running and working out so the materials used in your gear, including any running trousers and pants you wear, needs to be designed to handle the wear and tear and use that you have planned! All of the pants featured on our list here were carefully tested so you can be sure the best fabrics available have been used in their design!

Believe it or not, the material your pants are made of can make or break your run. For example, cotton and fleece will weigh you down, restrict movement, and cause friction and chafing. Cotton also retains moisture, so it will weigh you down the more you sweat and make you very uncomfortable.

On the other hand, modern running pants specifically address the issues that will impede your runs. They prevent friction and chafing from occurring, wick away sweat, and provide you with the right amount of breathability.

So, when looking for your next pair of running pants or trousers look for those made of hydrophobic fibers–such as spandex, polyester, and nylon. This blend provides you with sweat-wicking, odor resistant, elastic, and much more comfortable pants.

On the other hand, lightweight synthetic fabrics also repel sweat and dry much faster than other options. High-quality fabrics are more durable and retain their shape much longer than the other two options.

Use

There are a number of ways you can use these pants and we wanted to make sure you have options that are designed for runners and athletes and people who are on the go. These pants are all made to be used for both indoor and outdoor running and exercising and can be used by beginners as well as experienced runners alike. Our review team tested dozens of running trousers to find the ten best to present to you here!

Colder weather will require thicker and more protective pants while hot weather requires lightweight, breathable, and seamless pants. Just because it’s cold, windy, rainy, and snowy doesn’t mean you have to skip your run. You just need to ensure you have a pair of pants that provides the features you will need to brave the environment. To combat the cold make sure you look for thermal-weight or lined tights with a micro-fleece interior to keep you warm, comfortable, and dry during your runs. Tighter fitting pants will also help retain heat and sweat-wicking material will keep you dry–thus preventing you from getting cold.

For windy weather, you will need to find a good pair of lightweight wind-blocking pants. Many of these offer full-leg wind protection thanks to strategically-placed windproofing materials on the front panel. This feature combined with breathable mesh back panels will provide you with the protection and comfort you need to brave those strong winds.

For the rain or snow make sure to find a pair of waterproof or water resistant running pants. Pants with DWR (durable water repellent) coating are just as soft, comfortable, and quiet as your regular pants—they just keep you drier and warmer. While waterproof pants offer some breathability, don’t expect optimal breathability because these are also meant to help keep you warm in this weather.

Style

There are a number of different styles that you can choose from as well when you are looking for a new pair of running trousers or pants. Each pair will offer something different in terms of how it fits and looks and feels. This is largely a matter of personal preference so we did our best to include a range of styles and designs for you to choose from and made sure to feature a variety of choices here on our top ten list!

Nowadays you have lots of running pants to choose from. It’s possible to find a pair that offers the features you are looking for that also looks great. Regardless of whether you like loose-fitting pants, tight-fitting pants, colorful options, or simple styles–there is an option out there for you.

While you should always consider performance before looks, don't think you're being shallow if you consider this to be an important factor. Studies have proven that those who like how they look in their running gear run longer and more often than those who don't, so believe it or not choosing a pair that you like the looks of can help you to stay on track to achieving your fitness goals.

Fit

It is important to make sure your pants fit well when you are heading to the gym to work out or are about to hit the trails for a long run. You do not want to be constantly fiddling with pants and twist and slip and slid around. Likewise pants that are too tight will cut off circulation and be uncomfortable on longer runs and workout sessions. We made sure to find pants that have accurate sizing for you to go by!

There are lots of options when it comes to fit–from loose-fitting pants to semi-fitted and compression options, you have plenty of choices when it comes to fit. Unlike tights, running pants are semi-fitted and much looser. While we do have a few tight options on our list, we are going to specifically discuss semi-fitted running pants here. These provide more breathability and are almost just as good as wearing shorts.

Features

The final factor we carefully considered when choosing the pants for this top ten list was what additional features each one had to offer. Feature such as pockets, waistband design, overall fit, moisture wicking design, comfort, and durability all were taken into account as well during the testing and selection process. Only the pants with the best features were included here on our list for you!

Nowadays there are lots of additional features you can look for. While many pants no longer have tags, seams, zippers, fasteners, or drawstrings that will cause abrasions during your run, there are many that come with additional pockets, mesh panels, and unique styles to choose from.

Factors in choosing

Consider what types of climates you generally run in, as well as the length of your runs to determine the right fit and fabrics.

Ch ch ch ch chafing!

There isn't anything worse than getting home after your run and having massive burns, make sure your material of choice and pattern cut will help mitigate this issue.

Other Factors to Consider

Compression

While some may argue the benefits of compression pants there is still much research that proves their many benefits. We have included a few compression options on our list because they are the perfect option for many runners. Compression pants strategically bind the muscles and ligaments in order to stabilize your knees and reduce muscle vibration. They increase efficiency, facilitate circulation, and minimize lactic acid build-up to improve your performance and facilitate your recovery.

Color

While it might not seem like a big deal, the color you choose for your running pants can have an impact on your runs and workouts. If you are fond of early morning or evening runs or are the type who will go for a run even if it is raining, then you know how bad visibility can be at times. By wearing brighter colors, you can be more visible to drivers and other pedestrians around you. This will help you stay safe while you are out for a run. So be sure to stop for a moment and think about when and where you will be running and consider what colors are best suited for your needs as well as your own personal preference!

Comfort

You are also going to want to think about the comfort level of the running pants you buy too. There is no point in spending money on pants that are not going to feel good and that will be uncomfortable while you are out and about. No one wants to deal with stretchy irritating materials while they are out for a run and no one wants to deal with bunching and twisting pants that don’t fit while working out. Distractions like these make it hard to stay focused and get a good workout or run finished. This is why we made sure all the pants featured here are rated highly for comfort so you can focus on the more important things!

Flexibility

Many runners do not tend to think much about flexibility when they are shopping for new gear but this is an important feature to consider. When you are running or working out, it is important to maintain good flexibility and range of motion. If your gear restricts your movement too much it can affect your performance and can make your run and move in ways that are not normal and this can lead to injury. We made sure that every pair of running pants added here are tested and highly rated when it comes to flexibility and being easy to move around in, even for long periods of time!

Durability

The final thing you are going to want to check when looking for new running trousers is how durable they are. Runners put their gear through a lot each and every day so it is important to make sure the gear we use is durable and will hold up to that intensity of use. We here at RunnerClick know how important it is to make a good investment in your running gear so we made sure to check every pair of trousers we listed here to ensure they are durable and made to last. You can rest assured that your money will be going to durable gear that will stand the wear and tear and will last for a good long time!

Frequently Asked Questions

q: Should I wear underwear with my running pants?

a:

Running tights are designed so both men and women can run comfortably in them without underwear. You should avoid underwear during long runs to prevent chafing – however, if you prefer to wear underwear you should opt for synthetic sports briefs that wick moisture and stay in place.

q: Are there pants that have built-in underwear?

a:

Not that we are aware of, but you can find many running shorts with this feature.

q: What's the difference between breathability and moisture-wicking?

a:

Good question. These terms are often used interchangably and they're similar but most certainly different from one another. Breathability is how ventilated something is. For example a pair of pants with mesh side panels will allow moisture to escape from the inside of the pants to the outside air. Moisture-wicking means that when moisture touches the fabric it moves through it to the air where it can dry naturally.

q: How should I care for my running pants?

a:

We get this question a lot and as always we recommend you consult the care instructions that come with the product as each requires different techniques when it comes to washing and drying. For synthetic materials however, we always recommend you don't put them in the dryer. Instead hang them and let them air dry naturally. This is because the breathability of synthetic materials comes from the fact that synthetic fibers can't absorb moisture so it has to go around them to the outside air where it dries naturally. Putting a piece of gear made from synthetic materials in the dryer can lead to shrinkage, which may cause the space between the fibers to become too tight and thus not allow the moisture to get through. This can definitely affect a product's breathability.
