a recap of the 2017 The Running Event trade show The Running Event 2017 Recap

Last week I had the pleasure to attending The Running Event (TRE for short) in Austin, Texas. This running trade show is the mecca of all things running, with both famous running brands and up-and-comers alike displaying their newest product- many which won’t be available until 2018. Below are some of the great products I had the chance to preview at TRE.

Brooks Running is keeping the upcoming versions of many of their much-loved shoes, like the Glycerin, very similar to their previous versions. Why fix something if it isn’t broke, right? However, the 2018 releases will include new design elements like improved fabrics, outsole materials, and some very eye-catching stylistic updates.  A new addition to their Energize lineup, called the Bedlam, will hit stores in 2018, promising ultimate support and stability on their new Levitate foam.

Under Armour

In 2018, Under Armour will be launching its new shoe platform, which they call HOVR. This new technology boasts an energy web that provides cushioning and responsiveness.  I had a chance to run a 5k through Austin in the Sonic, and the HOVR platform is definitely going to shock many runners ( in a good way!). Look for HOVR in stores in early 2018.

HOKA One One

HOKA, known for their light and well-cushioned running platforms, will be releasing a new shoe in 2018. The Torrent is a lightweight shoe meant for technical trails that features the brand’s Profly midsole. You will have to have some patience, however, as the Torrent doesn’t hit shelves until June!

Skechers isn’t the first brand many people think of when it comes to running shoes, but they are gaining more clout within the industry everyday. Next year will bring the release of updates from some of Skechers most popular options, including the Go Run 6, Go Meb Razor 2, and the Meb Speed 5. More professional athletes, like Edward Cheserek, are signing on with the brand as a result of their ability to improve and impress. Look for their latest foam, FLIGHT GEN, which promises to be extremely light but performs well.

Gatorade Endurance

When most people think of Gatorade, they think of team sports. However, Gatorade has an ultra-athlete focused line, called Gatorade Endurance, that is meant to meet the hydration, energy, and recovery needs of long distance runners. The products in the line include mix-in powders, energy gels, and energy chews… and they are definitely tasty! Pick some up at your local running store and see that Gatorade isn’t just for high school football teams anymore!

If you are particular about your running socks (like I am), I have some good news for you! Some of the biggest running sock brands, including Darn Tough, Balega, Feetures, Zensah, Swiftwick, Injinji, and more, are coming out with some great new options. These include everything from alternative materials (mohair and recycled plastic, anyone?) and unique incorporations, like silver (yes, real silver!).  There are also many new compression options being released, including those that are specifically meant for runners that suffer from plantar fasciitis. Get ready to buy lots of new socks in 2018!

Orange Mud

This brand is newer to the running market, but is turning heads with their hydration options for runners. They are engineered to have no bounce as you run, and even have packs that are adjustable, allowing women to customize them to attain the best fit. They have options that cater to both bottle and bladder users, so there is something for everyone, whether you run 5ks or 50ks.

The Boa System is an offering of innovative products engineered to help your shoes fit perfectly. The System has three parts: a dial, laces, and lace guides. Engineered specifically for the shoe on which they are placed (like the New Balance Fuel Sonic), these systems can be adjusted to fit within 1 mm to create the best and improve the precision, adaptability, and control you have over your footwear and your run.

TRE had an area dedicated to sports bras and being fitted properly for a sports bra. Additionally, they showcased brands like Shock Absorber and Handful that have a variety of offerings for athletes of all sizes. They also focused on bras that provided the high level of support that many runners seek but can’t always find at famous chain stores or big brand stores. We will be testing and reviewing some of the bras showcased at TRE, so check back for our results.

Hydrapak has some amazing new products coming out in 2018. But, unfortunately, they are so fantastic they asked me to wait until January to release any specific information. So, make sure you check our site for reviews of some of the latest and greatest hydration gear from Hydrapak!

Never heard of an Elliptigo? Well, you are definitely going to want to check this brand out! They offer cardio machines that offering the running stride of an elliptical, but can be used outdoors for exercise. It is a great option for a recovery day or for getting over an injury. An Elliptigo is also a great choice for those of us who are older (and wiser of course) but whose knees and hips might not love running on hard surfaces anymore.

I learned about and tried so much new gear from so many brands that there really isn’t enough space to write about it here. However, we will be posting reviews of every product we can, so keep checking for new reviews everyday! And, if you ever get a chance to attend TRE- go! It is a runner’s heaven!
