Puma Tsugi Shinsei Raw Review Facts
The name of this futuristic casual line of Puma sneakers reveals the brand’s intention in making them: “Tsugi” in Japanese means “next”, and indeed, Puma has created the next IT casual shoe that sneaker lovers all over the world will rave about. The amazing design of this shoe is inspired by Japanese architecture and it features an EvoKnit breathable mesh upper, the IGNITE foam midsole, a sock-like fit, and an intriguing lacing system that makes the shoe really special and memorable. The Tsugi Shinsei Raw comes in three beautiful colorways: a clean, tonal black one that is present throughout the Tsugi line, and the “Peacoat-Whisper” and “Marshmallow-PUMA White” which are limited to the Raw version. The Tsugi Shinsei Raw differs from the original by having more knitted material on the upper, increasing the flexibility and breathability of the shoe. Last but not least is its excellent price point that will make not buying this beauty a challenge.
The sleek-looking outsole of the Puma Tsugi Shinsei Raw lifestyle shoe is made of a rubber compound and dons a razor-edged design with minimal lugs that increase the overall stability and ensure a solid grip on dry surfaces. On the back of the outsole is an imprinted Puma logo on top of diamond-shaped small lugs that are there mostly because of the appealing design. In general, the nature of this modern shoe allows the outsole to skew more towards beauty than actual heavy-duty features that are typical in most running or trail shoes.
On the lateral back side of the foam midsole is the IGNITE sign that tells it all: the heart and sole (get it?) of the Tsigi Shinsei Raw is the IGNITE foam so often featured in an array of the brand’s running shoes. This midsole represents a fusion of style and technology and blends effortlessly with the contemporary upper, while retaining all the great aspects of responsiveness, cushioning and comfort that can be found in a high-quality running shoe. While this shoe isn’t made with running in mind, the energy rebound this midsole will provide will prove to be enough if you do decide to take this shoe for a spin around the block.
Compared to the original Puma Tsugi Shinsei, the raw version features more of the stretchy EvoKnit material, making it all the more soft, flexible and breathable. Conversely, the Puma Tsugi Shinsei Nido has more leather overlays, which will probably result in slightly increased durability compared to the model in question. The lightweight upper of the Tsugi Shinsei Raw features a sock-like collar, a ripstop tongue that gives the ultra-modern final look to the shoe, as well as the panel lacing system on the lateral side of the shoe with elegant and urban metal eyelets. One of the most popular parts of the upper is the elasticated heel wrap that helps secure the fit of the upper and increase the already immense comfort of this shoe.
The choice of materials used to make this beautiful lifestyle shoe makes it impossible for it not to land in the lightweight category. The super soft knit upper is practically weightless and feels like a sock, while the midfoot panel adds just a fraction of weight and support to it, and the IGNITE midsole is equally as airy as the upper. All in all, this is a shoe you won’t feel on your feet and that won’t ‘drag’ you down after a long walk.
material used throughout the upper of the Puma Tsugi Shinsei Raw provides maximum breathability and airflow even without any movement whatsoever. The ultra-light, ultra-soft mesh knit fabric ensures your feet won’t get sweaty, overheated, or develop blisters as a result – the Shinsei Raw is just ever so slightly less breathable than a sock.
If you’re not sold on the looks of this piece of art, then you should be sold on the comfort it provides. The fully-knitted sock-like upper makes slipping into the shoe extremely easy and the upper sits upon the cushiony, thick midsole and the unique and intriguing lacing system provides an ideal fit without restricting any of the natural movements of the foot. Some customers that aren’t accustomed to the sock-collar feature have complained about it irritating them throughout the day; however, this is a matter of habit and personal preference. The shoe runs a bit wider so if you have narrow feet our advice would be to go a half-size down when ordering online, although it’s always best to try out the shoe in the store. Other than the width, the shoe runs true to size and comes in men’s US size 7.5 to 14 and women’s US size 5.5 to 11.
The design of the Puma Tsugi Shinsei Raw is unique, interesting and beautiful, with a very modern and slightly futuristic vibe that’s characteristic of Japan. The tongue may look bulky, but it doesn't translate that way on the foot, and the overall tonal design gives a minimalist appearance to the shoe. On the back of the shoe is a thick heel wrap which increases heel stability but also uses the space to place a large, yet discreet PUMA sign. The shoe comes in three colorways: Tonal black, “Peacoat-Whisper” and “Marshmallow-PUMA White”.
The overall durability of this lifestyle shoe is satisfactory. The materials used in its construction are of high-quality and the knit upper panel, combined with the outsole that stretches onto the top of the toe box increase the life expectancy of the upper. With rational use and without getting near to any sharp objects that could tear the upper, you can expect this modern shoe to last you a while.
Due to the use of IGNITE foam compound in the midsole, the Puma Tsugi Shinsei Raw offers protection that’s on par with some running shoes, especially in the heel area. The midsole offers good impact-protection as well as some shock-absorbing properties, although some customers stated they would prefer if the insole was removable. Nevertheless, you won’t experience any knee or joint pain, even after a whole day spent in this lightweight cushioned shoe. The protective shield in the midfoot area provides some protection
to the top of the foot – without it, we would basically be looking at a sock placed on a foam midsole, so it helps quite a bit.
The brand’s famous IGNITE foam is responsive, to be sure, but realistically speaking it can’t measure with its contenders – the Adidas BOOST
and the Nike Air Max
soles. However, this is the best sole in terms of responsiveness in its price range and will provide you with a sufficient amount of energy-return, bounciness, and lightness during your stride, although it won’t knock your socks off.
The Puma Tsugi Shinsei Raw is a low-top casual shoe meant for people looking for maximum freedom of movement. This, however, came at a price of minimal arch support which doesn’t sit well with people who have low arches or flat feet because it causes strain on the heel after the whole day of wear. This is another downside of the non-removable insole which prevents you from putting custom orthotics on the shoe’s footbed. However, if you have normal, medium-high or high arches, you’ll probably find that you don’t need additional arch support and the sock-collar wrap is supportive enough for your ankles, and the side-lacing system provides a snug, supportive fit for the foot. Additionally, the wide Puma
strap on the back of the upper helps lock down the heel and stabilize the whole foot.
This is a trainer with a high-street vibe that will look good in the gym, on the streets, and in the club. It’s not a shoe you should take on track to log some serious miles in, but the IGNITE foam
technology does give you the option of running in it on short distances. However, the Puma Tsugi Shinsei Raw is meant primarily for walking and showing off.
The pricing of this stylish lifestyle shoe is really affordable, especially given the build quality and the overall design
of the Shinsei Raw. If you’re looking for a regular walking shoe that looks and feels great, gives a solid performance in each department, and you have less than a C-note to spend, you’ll get the bang for your buck, that’s for sure.
Traction is a performance-oriented aspect of a running shoe, and seeing how the Shinsei Raw is a casual sneaker that boasts an IGNITE sole, but not much else, it would be unreasonable to expect fantastic traction. However, the razor-edged rubber outsole gives a satisfactory performance, especially on dry terrain
. Due to the construction of the outsole lugs, we would steer clear of taking the shoe on a wet surface.
The super-stretchy upper EvoKnit material allows for a lot of natural foot movement and flexibility, without any restrictions to the foot, and the IGNITE foam is also flexible and perfectly capable to adapt to the flexibility demands while walking. If you plan on running in the Shinsei Raw, there’s a chance that you’ll find the sole to be a bit stiffer than what you’d like, but if you intend to stroll around in this casual shoe, you’ll find that it has amazing sole and upper flexibility that contribute to its overall comfort
Due to a wider sole platform construction and the wider foot base that goes with it, this is a pretty stable shoe in its casual wear category. The side lacing system and the PUMA heel elastic strap are mutually connected so that they subtly encase the whole foot inside the otherwise soft upper and greatly add to the overall stability. The rearfoot area of the outsole is peaking for almost a whole centimeter behind where the heel of the upper ends, so the stability is especially prominent in the rearfoot area of the Shinsei Raw. Of course, if you’re in need of a stability or a motion control shoe
, you’re going to want to skip this one and go directly to a shoe made to tackle that problem diligently.
Similarly to the traction and support features, the drop is the most relevant when we’re discussing a running shoe or a trail shoe because the faster your stride, the more adequate position and support you need to have in order to avoid injuries and uncomfortable strains on your joints. With the Puma Tsugi Shinsei Raw this isn’t the case, and although the drop seems to be in the range of a 10mm one, it won’t drastically alter your overall experience while wearing the shoe.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Puma Tsugi Shinsei Raw is the futuristic, modern style of the upper that is both prominent and gentle at the same time. The brand has approached the Tsugi line
from an artistic perspective, looking to create the next it-sneaker look that will be built with premium materials that match the quality of the design itself. In our opinion, Puma has succeeded completely in their intention of bringing something new and exciting to the market – a beautiful, fresh design supported by a solid performance in every field, which makes this lifestyle sneaker really, really hard not to buy.
