Editor’s Conclusion
This is a shoe that is built to conquer the trails while also wrapping your feet in 360 degrees of comfort. It boasts a super-dense EVA midsole that is insanely responsive and a durable upper that just begs you to run through the mud.

The upper is stretchy and cushioned and wraps your feet in comfort while reducing the overall break-in period. I also love that the thick rubber outsole has aggressive chevron lugs that grip the trails under your feet, and has a slightly tacky finish that is perfect for running through wet leaves or slick trailheads.

It’s a shoe that is fast, a little more lightweight than your standard trail running shoe, and adds an extra spring to your step.

The downside of this shoe is that it doesn’t provide runners with a plate between the midsole and outsole, which leaves your feet vulnerable to jagged rocks.

Below, I wanted to take a deep dive into all of the advanced features that make the Salomon Supercross 3 a fantastic trail running shoe that is worth checking out.

If you want to break free of your desk and run into the woods never to be seen again, you will want a shoe like the Salomon Supercross 3 strapped to your feet!

Key Features

Key Features

MIDSOLE

The midsole is composed of Salomon’s proprietary EnergyCell cushioning. It is made from a very dense layer of EVA foam that is designed to absorb shock and take it easy on your joints. When you slip your foot into the shoe, it does not provide that soft and squishy step-in feel found in plush cushioned shoes.

While the midsole feels a bit stiff and firm when you slip your foot inside, it really shines as you start to run. This dense EVA foam provides runners with excellent energy return and feels like you are running with an extra spring in your step.

Plus, this dense foam won’t squish down into a pancake over time like more light and squishy EVA foam compounds. It may be stiff but it is incredibly responsive and durable.

I found it a little peculiar that this trail running shoe doesn’t include a rock plate between the midsole and outsole. It’s not necessarily a deal-breaker, but it is worth noting for some runners.

If the trails you run are ripe with jagged rocks, the absence of a rock plate makes you feel each and every rock underfoot.

The absence of a rock plate makes this shoe lighter and more agile (as well as more affordable), but it may be a problem for runners that live in a rocky area of the world.

OUTSOLE

Composed of Salomon’s ContaGrip TD, the outsole of this running shoe is perfect for mixed terrains. The aggressive lugs on the base measure to be 5 mm deep, which really digs into the ground under your feet.

The rubber on this design is incredibly durable, and it is made to withstand hundreds of miles while showing very little signs of overall wear and tear.

I love that the chevron design of these lugs helps to propel you forward, and is spaced far enough apart that every rock and twig on the trail won’t get lodged in the outsole of your running shoe.

The construction of the ContaGrip TD is perfect for powering through muddy trails or slick leaves without losing traction on uneven surfaces.

While this outsole is incredibly durable, I love that it is still quite flexible and perfect not only for long distances but also for snappy sets as well.

UPPER

The upper is composed of Salomon’s SensiFit technology that only gets better the more that you wear it. As you run, the materials used in the upper of this design contour to the unique shape of your foot that helps to prevent rubbing and chafing when running for long distances.

It boasts a stiff heel counter for improved lockdown, and a high flared heel collar that protects your Achilles tendon for a more comfortable fit. It uses pull-string laces that lock in place with a clip, making it a cinch to pull the laces tightly against your foot.

What I also love about the upper design of this shoe is that it is composed of ripstop nylon that is insanely durable.

Ripstop nylon is the same type of material used in the construction of camping tents, so you know that it plays well with bad weather.

The upper is incredibly breathable and helps to wick away moisture to keep your feet cool and dry on those messy and muddy runs on the trails.

PERFORMANCE

Overall, I would suggest the Salomon Supercross 3 for speedy tempo runs to long distances on messy and muddy trails.

The dense EVA foam midsole provides runners with a good deal of energy return and responsiveness that helps to keep your stride light and snappy.

The upper is also built incredibly tough, making it the perfect option for running in the rain or messy weather conditions.

While it’s built for the trails, it is important to note that it isn’t built for every trail. The absence of a rock plate really hinders the overall performance of this shoe.

If the trails that you navigate are filled with sharp rocks and tree stumps, you will feel them underfoot as you run!

While this won’t necessarily affect your overall performance, there are few things more annoying and painful than feeling a jagged rock dig into the bottom of your foot!

To keep your feet happy, I suggest sticking to softer terrains that are free of jagged rocks.

FIT

Salomon suggests that you opt for a size that is a full size down from your standard Salomon size. Many runners found that the stretchy nature of the upper was a little bit too stretchy, and it affected the shoes’ overall lockdown.

Even when the laces are cinched as tightly as possible, many runners found that the shoe still slid around on their foot as they ran. T

o achieve a more locked-in feel, it’s important to size down. If you have never worn a pair of Salomon trainers before, be sure to take good measurements of your feet and compare them to Salomon’s detailed sizing chart (and then buy one size smaller).

STYLE

Overall, I love the style of these Salomon trail running shoes. While other trail runners look a little big and boxy, the Salomon Supercross 3 maintains a sleek running shoe design while also being built for the trails.

This shoe is only available in a few color options, which include teal and light gray. If you are a fan of bright and poppy color options, you might be a little disappointed at the very muted color options available.

However, the lacing system does offer a bright pop of color in the gray option, which makes them look unique.

PRICE

One of the best features of the Salomon Supercross 3 is that it comes in at a super affordable price point.

Often, trail running shoes are quite expensive due to the advanced features in the outsole that are made to really grip the trails.

This design, on the other hand, is one of the most affordable trail running shoes out there on the market.

While the price tag may be low, this shoe doesn’t possess all of the extra bells and whistles found on many of the other trail running shoes out there, such as a stiff rock plate to protect your feet.

This shoe will give you the durability and performance of a trail running shoe without the steep price point.
Verdict

Verdict

The Salomon Supercross 3 isn’t a perfect running shoe. It has a wide frame that requires runners to buy a full size down to provide adequate lockdown, and the absence of a rock plate is a bit of a problem.

However, despite its missteps, this is still a really great trail running shoe that will add an extra spring to your step. I love the super comfortable and durable ripstop nylon upper with a firm yet comfortable heel counter, and the responsive EVA foam midsole cushioning.

The durable rubber outsole really grips the trails under your feet, and it is designed to last hundreds of miles before showing any signs of wear and tear.

For trail runners that live in a part of the world with soft and muddy trails, the Salomon Supercross 3 is a great option.

It’s comfortable, responsive, and made from durable materials that can withstand running on messy and muddy trails.

The best part is that it is one of the most affordable trail running shoes out there on the market. If you are in need of a good trail runner that won’t drain your bank account, the Salomon Supercross 3 is worth checking out!
