    Girls on the Run is a terrific, nationwide non-profit that “inspires girls to to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.” In May, the organization puts on a 5k to celebrate the work done by program participants. It’s a big deal for those who have gone through the program. However, people who are not part of the program can participate as well. It is a family-friendly event.The course takes place around Carey Park and there are spectators to cheer on runners. Registration is $20 and participants can sign up to be running buddies, or run together as a team.

    The Kansas Heart and Sole Classic is a fun, well-attended race, which is organized by the Olathe Running Club. 2018 will be the 37th year of the event. It brings out all levels of runners and is family-friendly. Many elementary students participate in the event as part of a year-round training program. The race starts downtown and finishes at the courthouse. A 10k is also available for those looking for more of a challenge. The registration fee is $30. A portion of the proceeds benefit Special Olympics of Kansas.

    Thanksgiving Day 5k
    A good run before a massive pig out is always a good idea. The Thanksgiving Day 5k is Kansas’ answer to the traditional Thanksgiving Run. The event starts at Spring Campus. The event is well attended and participants line up by projected finish time at the start. The race is family friendly and includes a stroll for those who do not want to take the race too seriously. Children are encouraged to participate. The registration fee is $28 and benefits the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation. Awards are given to the top finishers.

    Waldo McBurney Race
    The Waldo McBurney Race is a unique event and speaks to the endearing spirit of Quinter. The race celebrates the cities most famous centenarian, who throughout his life made fitness a priority. 2018 is the 10th year of the eent. Proceeds benefit the Castle Rock Wellness Center. The race starts at Quinter City Park, and primarily takes place on gravel country roads outside the city. Registration is $20, which is a screamin’ deal and includes a technical t-shirt. Organizers also put on a pasta party the night before the race. Awards are given to the top finishers.

    Freedom Run
    The Freedom Run is Junction City’s answer to the classic 4th of July Run. The race has a long history and 2018 will be the 42nd year of the race. It is organized by the Manhattan Running Company and Junction City Crossfit. It starts at Heritage Park. The race is family friendly and includes a 5k for those looking for a shorter distance, and a fun run mile. Racers should be prepared for the heat. The first 500 people to register are guaranteed a medal and t-shirt. The entry fee is $25.

    Junction City 4 June 2018 Freedom Run
    Brew 2 Shoe
    The Brew 2 Shoe 10k is a fun event that celebrates a partnership between the Manhattan Running Company and Tallgrass Brewing Company. 2018 will be the 10th year of the event and it has grown considerably and will approach 1,000 participants. The race starts and finishes at Tallgrass Taphouse, which means beer is certainly involved at the finish line. Pizza is also provided for those needing to replenish calories. Children are encouraged to participate in the event, sans the beer part. Roads are not closed for the race, so participants need to exercise caution. The entry fee is $28 and awards are provided to the top finishers.

    Rural Route 13.1
    This is a rural race for sure. The Rural Route races takes place on country roads throughout Jewell County Kansas. While it is easy to think of Kansas as being flat, the course certainly has rolling hills that can be challenging. The race brings out all levels of runners and it’s family-friendly with different race distances available. The race is affordable at $10 or $30 for entry that includes a performance t-shirt. In addition, a pasta dinner is provided the night before and breakfast is provided at the finish line. Course support is provided throughout the race. Past participants have noted the beautiful scenery.

    Lake Perry Trail Runs
    The Lake Perry Trail series is not for the faint at heart. While a half is available, so is a 50k. The race takes place on a trail and is hilly and rocky. It goes through the Hardwood Forest and is a single track. The location is remote and many opt to cap the night before the race. The entry fee is $65 and includes a good-looking shirt, stickers, and medal. At the finish line, food and beer is provided. Training on trails is recommended beforehand. In addition, participants should follow trail etiquette during the race.

    Meriden 19 May 2018 Lake Perry Trail Runs
    CASA Superhero Run
    2018 will be the inaugural CASA Superhero Run. It is being organized by Gary Gribble’s Running Sports and benefits CASA, which provides advocates for children in courtrooms. Given the beneficiary of the race, it is certainly family-friendly and also includes a 5k distance and kid’s fun run. Costumes are encouraged. The course goes along the Lawrence Loop and is scenic. Rather than a t-shirt, participants will receive a groovy cape, which is unique. The entry fee is $65. Participants will be light the first year, but the event is expected to grow.

    Kansas Half Marathon
    The Kansas Half Marathon is a popular race with big sponsors. The course starts and ends at Watson Park, and winds through the city and crosses the Kansas River. Given the late date, it can be a cold run. Though the timing is nice because training is not needed around the holidays. The cost is $60. Awards are given to the top finishers and it is a competitive races that draws runners from around the US. Pacers are present from the Runner’s Edge Training Program. The logo for the event is cool and it is placed on the medal, which all finishers receive.

    The Hawk Hundred
    The Hawk Hundred is a serious race. While there is a half, there is also a 50 mile and 100 mile run. The event is put on by the Lawrence Trail Hawks and 2018 is the 8th year of the event. The race takes place entirely on trails in the Clinton State Park. While trails can mean many different things, this particular trail is especially technical and difficult, so appropriate training is certainly needed. It has solid sponsors and thus solid course support. The entry fee is $105.Be ready for strong competition.

    Lawrence 8 September 2018 The Hawk Hundred
    Patriots’ Run
    The Patriots’ Run is not the most exciting marathon you’ll ever do, but it is for a good cause. It is not an out and back run, or a point-to-point run, but rather 26 one mile loops. Needless to say, this can get a little boring. However, around the course there is a good environment with a lot of spectators, food, and drinks. In addition, many teams participate, and there is a heavy presence of first responders. And speaking of first responders, the event celebrates them and remembers those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The entry fee is $45.

    Olathe 11 September 2018 Patriots’ Run
    Little Apple Marathon
    Manhattan, Kansas is hosting its first ever Marathon in 2018, the Little Apple. It will be four loops around Tuttle Creek State Park. Parts of the trail will be dirt and parts will be paved. Overall, it’s flat and only gains 100 feet in elevation. It is known to be a fast course and will be a Boston Qualifier. However, racers have been warned that passing others will be difficult. It is being hosted by the Manhattan Running Company. The early entry fee is $70 and includes a t-shirt. Pacers, which are very helpful, will be provided. Awards will be given to the top finishers.

    Manhattan 3 November 2018 Little Apple Marathon
    Gobbler Grind Marathon
    The Gobbler Grind Marathon has a long history and is a popular race. 2018 will be the 22nd year of the event. It starts at Founder’s Park in Corporate Woods. Part of the race is on a scenic and paved trail and the other part is on the road. The top elevation point is just under 1100 feet and there are a few gradual hills. The course is a Boston Qualifier, but given the hills, it’s not the fastest course option. The entry fee is $75 and finishers receive a hoodie and blanket, which is great for the season. This race also falls at a great time because training won’t be needed during the holidays.
