    Girls on the Run 5k
Girls on the Run is a terrific, nationwide non-profit that “inspires girls to to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.”In June, the organization puts on a 5k to celebrate the work done by program participants. It’s a big deal for those who have gone through the program, and before the race starts, the girls do a warm-up, get their hair done, and get face paint. However, people who are not part of the program can participate as well. It is a family-friendly event. Registration is $30. There is a discount for groups of four or more.

    Sand Hollow
The Sand Hollow 5k is part of a larger marathon. It takes place in a rural area and does not have many participants. However, past racers have noted the course is beautiful and scenic. On race day, the weather seems to always be beautiful. Not too cold and not too hot. Spectators can watch from the sides of the roads, but there are not many of them given that it is a small town. There are rolling hills on the course. In addition the race is well organized and has support on the course. The 5k would be a good race for a family member to participate in if there loved one is running the full marathon. It is important to note that registration closes quickly.

    Blood Run
The Blood Run is certainly unique, especially for Utah. It has a Zombie theme and there is more to do on the course than simply run. Throughout the race there are pretend dead bodies. Some of them come alive and chase the runners. The object of the Zombies is to catch the runners and leave bloody prints on their white tee shirts. Then, if someone gets a print, they are “infected.” The object of the game is to get away untouched. It is morbid, to say the least. That said, it is popular run and is well attended. Teams are encouraged.

    Lantern Run Salt Lake City
Lantern runs happen throughout the western United States. The event happens at night time, and light is provided by lanterns, as the name implies. The starting line is at LIberty Park. Race organizers are big on capping the participants at 100, which is slightly odd given the work it takes to produce. They also deem it “private” and note there is no DJ or after party. Runners are not officially timed. Glow in the dark gear is encouraged, and many folks wear glow sticks. Race packets are mailed and participants do not have to pick them up prior the race, which is convenient. The entry fee is $40.
