Adidas Yeezy Powerphase Review Facts
A result of a collaboration between Kanye West and Adidas, this shoe has created a lot of buzz as it deviates from his other collections greatly. A lone minimalist model in Kanye West’s Yeezy line with Adidas, the Powerphase is an ode to the classic 1980’s Reebok models. A risky experiment as this pair does not feature the Boost and Primeknit technology present in most Adidas models, the Powerphase has other features that put it in the luxury category. A shoe designed with style and comfort in mind, the Powerphase performs amazingly well as its neutral colors can pair with any kind of outfit with ease. It also doesn’t hurt that the quarter panel sports the Calabasas name in gold lettering and features the vintage Adidas logo on both sides of the shoe.
The outsole features a high-abrasion rubber that adds sturdiness to the shoe. Flipping the shoe over, we can see unique grooves in a tube-like system that increases traction on the ground. The heel tab is reminiscent of the Stan Smith heel tab and leather tongue and the inside is mesh-lined
Staying true to the midsole seen in other Adidas models, it features a classic rubber cup that has a unique shape. It almost looks like 2 mouthguards where one is upfront at the tip of the shoe while the other is at the end, leaving the midpoint thinned out. You can also see a black die-cut EVA midsole and the EVA foam is only exposed in the mid-foot of the shoe. The midsole is quite comfortable considering that the purpose of this shoe is more for its style rather than running
Inside the shoe, the sockliner of the sneaker is covered in matching grey mesh. There is adequate padding around the ankle which provides a comfortable experience.
Kanye’s third and latest iteration of this silhouette features a thin, smooth and buttery leather
. The heel is the only area with structural leather and that’s because it is supported with a heel vacuum to keep our Achilles intact. Even then, the leather is plush enough and sinks when you press into it. The shoe features a kind of lenient leather that stretches all the way to the toe box and then wraps to the medial side as well. Both the lateral side of the sports shoe supports subtle stitching to create Adidas’ iconic three strike branding. They also have perforated holes that will air heat out of the sneakers with additional ventilation spots over the toebox as well.
Even though this shoe features premium leather and a rubber cup sole, this shoe is surprisingly lightweight. Designed for daily wear, it is very important for the shoe to be light and not feel heavy on the foot and this shoe fits the bill perfectly. The absence of the Ultraboost technology also makes this among the lighter options from the Yeezy Adidas line.
The midfoot consists of Adidas’s classic 3-stripes branding made of diagonal stitches and perforation holes that air heat out of the shoe and increase air flow. The inner lining of the Powerphase is made of mesh that helps flick away moisture
. But since this shoe was not designed for high-impact usage, these features will keep your feet clean and moisture-free when worn for casual use.
Despite not featuring the boost and bounce technology found in other Adidas shoes, this shoe is still quite comfortable. You can find a tongue made of puffy leather under the laces which is very lush to the touch. The inner lining of the hindfoot area is made of mesh and is padded generously for a comfortable ankle rest.
The shoe comes with non-removable insoles printed with the Adidas logo. The inner lining of the shoe matches up to the high-quality of the outside with its furry suede interior. This material enhances the comfort of the shoe that much more, especially for those people who don’t like to wear socks.
Yeezy shoes are known for their sleek silhouette and futuristic design but the Yeezy Powerphase deviates from this signature look. The silhouette is classic, clean and almost minimalist which will appeal to a lot of millennials.
Built like a tennis-style profile, there are quite a lot of similarities with the Reebok Classics. These sneakers come in 3 colorway namely, coral white, black, and grey
. The white colorway is the most popular one amongst the three shoes. The green and red retro Adidas logo breaks the monotony of the single color and the gold Calabasas (the city where Kanye resides) adds a modern look to it.
For the black variant of the Powerphase, photos reflect a triple black colorway but it turns out to be a charcoal black in reality which still looks great. The monotone colorway makes this shoe very versatile and can go with many outfits. The laces stay true to the color of the upper which is laudable since all the parts of the shoe are made of different material, yet give a one-toned look.
A lot of runners appreciated the fact that these shoes are off-white and not very pristine white as the likelihood of getting them dirty would be high. The Yeezy Powerphase Calabasas is available in a wide range of sizes from 4-14 with half sizes that give buyers a lot of precision in size.
Because the leather is so soft, there will be creasing the entire time you wear it. The fact that it’s so thin and pliable, also makes it less durable than many other leather upper materials. The pattern of grooves underfoot is complexly made to give the shoe more traction, allowing them to withstand heavy wear and tear. The choice of an EVA midsole adds to the lifespan of the shoe as it is a strong kind of rubber that can take compression and provide a cushion-like feeling.
There are many elements of the Powerphase that bring adequate protection to the shoe. At the bottom of the tongue, you will find a leather panel that is primarily for reinforcement and connecting the toe to the tongue. The EVA foam of the midsole is an extremely elastic material yet is tough which makes the shoe cushioned and flexible
. Although you must keep in mind that this shoe was designed with style in mind and can provide protection for daily wear and not for running or sports.
The Adidas Powerboost is the only sneaker among the Yeezy range which does not include the boost technology
. This feature consists of a proprietary material that can bounce back to its original shape after being compressed. Since the Powerboost was made from a style point of view, this feature was discarded which also helped reduce the price of the shoe. Nevertheless, the overall walking experience in the Powerboost is pleasant and without pain once you have the right size.
The midsole is thinner than other similar shoes and can be troublesome for someone with big feet
. An inside look shows a furry suede material thus your feet will be well-rested on a piece of premium lining. This not only justifies the price of the shoe but also ensures that your foot remains in a supportive position throughout the day. Many have compared the support provided by the Powerboost with the Stan Smith but with a more lenient upper.
This shoe was not developed with the intention of being an all-terrain training shoe. Rather it was built to compliment your style while keeping your feet comfortable. This Adidas shoe works great for daily casual wear for a normal walking pace. But it would not serve the purpose for trail running or jogging on uneven or tough surfaces.
Compared to other Yeezy shoes, this one is the cheapest and a good option if you are a collector or really want to own a pair of Yeezys. A lot of customers buying this shoe for the brand reported that they wanted more Yeezy branding on the shoe. To keep the pair affordable enough to reach many more of Yeezy’s fans, the Utraboost technology was not included. Nevertheless, the Powerphase is still among premium shoes designed for style and luxury as is reflected in the buttery, soft leather upper. Keep in mind that although this shoe greatly resembles the Reebok
Classics, it is pricier than the former. Since the Powerphase is a limited edition model, they are quite difficult to get a hold off online and prices are likely to increase in the resale market.
It provides good traction and grip considering that this shoe is designed for fashionable use. The rubber sole of the shoe provides a decently good grip on a range of surfaces. The thick but soft padding around the ankle helps hold the ankle in place and prevents slippage thus giving you a sense of security. Wearing this shoe on wet surfaces is not recommended as the outsole isn’t made for providing grip in wet conditions.
Some users reported feeling a high degree of flexibility on the upper as it bends and conforms on the basis of your feet. This is due to the high-quality leather used which molds to the shape of your front feet while maintaining its structure. This shoe has a low heel which makes it great for general walking purposes as it helps roll off the toes in a walking stride.
This shoe was not built with stability in mind and we should not have very high expectations in this area. The sizing of the shoe runs true to size with some complaints about the narrowness of the toe box. Wide-footers can go up half a size as this will prevent ankle slippage
. The EVA midsole provides gentle cushioning from low-impact activities like walking, but it is not recommended to use this model for specialized activities like training or exercising. The lace-up closure allows for a more secure fit and helps keep the foot in place.
Keeping on trend as a minimalist shoe, this shoe has a low heel-toe drop that more than meets the needs of casual walkers. This is because casual walkers strike with their heel rather than the midfoot or forefoot, thus requiring only a minute difference in height between the heel and the ball of the foot.
• Incredibly soft, rich leather upper
• 3 monotone colorways
• Simple and minimalist silhouette designed like a vintage 80s tennis sneaker
• Eva Midsole for comfort and stability
• Meshed inner lining with a plush collar for comfort and ankle security
There have been a lot of polarizing reviews of the Powerphase with some appreciating Kanye’s take on the 80’s Adidas design and style, while others did not like the fact that this shoe is a complete departure from the previous Yeezy Boost line. Many pointed out that they are very similar to the Reebok Workout plus, however, the material on the Powerphase is spectacular and incomparable.
Even though the Reebok is cheaper, this limited edition Adidas model contains leather and inner plush material of which the Reebok cannot compete with. It is super easy to style and can be a good investment as these shoes sell for 2x-4x the price on the secondary market. The Kanye West brand has certainly made its name in the fashion industry and this shoe is a risk on his part which has paid off in leaps and bounds.
