The Altra Torin 4 is a recent addition to one of the brand's most widely praised lines of road running shoes. It still features that same comfortable cushioning and zero-drop platform as all of its predecessors. Yet this version is now designed to be more lightweight and responsive for a truly versatile wear.
Its FootPod outsole completely maps out the foot's inner anatomy for a more controlled gait cycle. Its substantial Quantic midsole provides plenty of responsive cushioning and comes equipped with the brand's Inner Flex to ensure greater flexibility. And along with a great deal of breathability, its engineered mesh upper has minimal printed-on overlays and a FootShape toe box for a more stable run and better overall comfort.
-Comfortable and breathable wear
-Great for relieving foot and joint pain
-Not enough arch support
Furthermore, small and shallow grooves are carved through the shoe's tread pattern. This is added to ensure a stronger grip onto paved road surfaces, whether they're wet or dry.
In addition, the midsole includes two of Altra's other trademarked technologies to further enhance the runner's wear. The first is the Inner Flex, which is a series of grooves that are formed within the midsole for even greater pliability. The second is the Natural Ride System, which consists of the brand's zero-drop platform and the FootPod outsole design.
Printed-on TPU overlays are added on to perform a number of different tasks. They help the shoe better maintain its overall structure and prevent damage to areas that would otherwise experience high amounts of wear, such as the lacing system. They also form a protective toe bumper and stabilizing heel clip to safeguard against impact and accidental removal.
A padded tongue and collar work along with the lacing system to ensure that the foot stays locked into place. A heel pull tab is also attached to the back to enable easier insertion.
Buyers have even stated that it continuously feels lightweight when they wear it, no matter where they are or what activity they partake in. This also further confirms just how versatile this model's wear is, as it's useful in both athletics and everyday life.
The use of engineered mesh for its upper allows continuous breathability and unrestrictive stability, thanks to its stretchiness and multiple air holes. Buyers also appreciate the extra toe room they get thanks to the brand's FootShape toe box.
The only downside is that a number of reviewers have claimed that this model does not fit true to size. As a result, many have suggested going at least half-a-size up when making a purchase.
Although this model does utilize overlays for protection and structure, the fact that they're so minimal allows this shoe to have a simpler look that can more easily blend in with a number of different environments. The brand's logo is still prominently featured, although this time it's along the sides of the forefoot instead of the midfoot area.
This model is available in three different colorways each for men's and women's sizes. Men can choose between Black/Red, Grey/Lime, and Grey/Blue. Women can choose from Plum/Coral, Black/Teal, or Grey/Purple.
Furthermore, engineered mesh is known to be a lot more resistant to wear and tear than standard mesh fabric. Yet with minimal overlays, it's clear that this shoe isn't meant to be used in rugged environments. Just as long as buyers do not frequently use this shoe for trail running or hiking, then it will definitely last them for a while.
While the design and engineering of its sole unit permits natural movement, the small grooves cut into its tread pattern enable a stronger grip on concrete or cement. The cushiony feel and 26mm height of its zero drop platform also help by lessening impact and, as a result, greatly reducing chronic pain and fatigue.
The engineered mesh upper enables a breathable wear that keeps the foot cool and dry and works well with the FootShape toe box to keep blisters and irritation at bay. And as the toe bumper shields against accidental impact, the heel clip works along with the shoe's padded collar and lacing system to ensure that it never slips off.
Furthermore, the energy return in this technology is said to be decent yet not as advanced as some of the brand's other midsole technologies. Therefore, it may not be as fit for use during long distance runs.
With all of that said, however, a number of buyers feel that this shoe could have offered more arch support. It's also unclear whether or not its insole can be swapped out for a custom insert to resolve this issue.
Although this cost may be expensive for some buyers, plenty actually find it to be reasonable when they look over everything that they will get in return. They find that its versatile wear and supreme level of comfort make it well worth every dollar spent. Of course, as stated before, buyers are recommended to either size up or try this model on first before making a purchase.
Furthermore, several reviews have also indicated that it can perform reasonably well on wet or slippery surfaces. With that said, this particular tread pattern won't be nearly as effective when it comes to trail running or hiking.
The outsole's FootPod technology carefully maps out all of the foot's bones and tendons, as shown by its intricate grooves and cuts. And while the cushiony Quantic midsole is already pliable on its own, the brand's Inner Flex enables the shoe to be even more flexible. Its engineered mesh upper also helps out greatly, as it's stretchy and features very minimal printed-on overlays.
The engineered mesh of its upper wraps securely around the foot to prevent over-flexing without being restrictive. And while minimal overlays help maintain the shoe's structure, the heel clip works along with the shoe's padded collar and lacing system to ensure that the foot stays in place all day.
-FootPod outsole technology
-Quantic midsole with Inner Flex
-Natural Ride System
-Engineered mesh upper
-Traditional lacing system
It's clear that Altra has fully utilized some of its best technology when it comes to constructing this shoe. From its FootPod outsole design and Quantic midsole to its FootShape toe box and the ever-present zero-drop platform, each one was carefully crafted to ensure the best wear possible.
Of course, this model is not completely perfect, as it's known to fit smaller than average. Yet for those who prefer a zero drop design, this is definitely one that they should consider for both workouts and daily life.
