Hoka One One Hupana 2 Review Facts
Watch Video Review

The French-based brand Hoka One One is known for creating running shoes with sizeable platforms. However, its more recent Hupana line doesn’t look quite as impressive as its other maximalist models. Most reviewers don’t seem to mind, as they have said that it works wonders during competitive runs. The second version in this line stays relatively unchanged from its predecessor, still showcasing all of the same features that reviewers enjoyed. Its substantial RMAT platform serves as both outsole and midsole, and still has the same swirled tread pattern as before. Its supportive cushioning is also responsive, powering the runner through their races and enabling them to reach high speeds. And its knitted fabric upper is still present to provide seamless comfort and unrestricted breathability. Of course, the fact that this version is available in several new colorways doesn’t hurt at all.

Outsole
Outsole

Outsole

As with the previous version, the Hupana 2 has a full-length RMAT unit that serves as both the midsole and outsole. The ground-contact foam is heavily textured all over and features a swirled tread pattern that follows the natural shape of a human foot. These outlines serve as flex grooves that allow the runner to move around more naturally and feel completely unrestricted while working out or taking part in competitions. There are also some slightly raised portions within the tread pattern, enabling a strong grip on paved roads and other everyday surfaces.
Midsole
Midsole

Midsole

RMAT is a type of blended rubber EVA created by Hoka One One. It's been engineered to give the runner higher amounts of elasticity, durability, and traction, all while being incredibly lightweight. Because of this, it's easy to see why the Hupana 2 used this technology for both its midsole and outsole. With a 25mm heel height and a 20mm toe height, it gives runners a substantial amount of cushioning while still permitting more natural and controlled movement. In addition, this unit also proves to be very responsive, completely absorbing the shock of each impact and transferring it into springy toe-offs. Reviewers credit this feature for the shoe's comfortable wear and the reduced amount of joint pain that they experience during the day.
Upper
Upper

Upper

The Hupana 2's upper still has the same minimalist design as its predecessor. A knitted fabric is used once again to enable a more breathable wear, with noticeable air holes along the forefoot. The front, sides, and heel are more close-knit to help the shoe maintain its shape and keep dirt and debris out of the foot chamber. Its soft textile lining is made with a seamless construction, enabling the runner to wear this shoe without socks. Its traditional lacing system features flat laces and extra eyelets at the edge of the collar. A padded tongue and pull tab are included to complete the design.
Weight
Weight

Weight

As a competition shoe, the Hupana 2 has to be lightweight and easy to wear. This is achieved with an average weight of 8.2 oz. for men and 6.3 oz. for women. Many runners say that they feel perfectly agile when participating in races or other competitions and are able to reach a surprisingly high speed while going shorter distances. Its light weight may also contribute to the reduced amount of pain that they experience while wearing this model.
Breathability
Breathability

Breathability

Like many good racing shoes on the market, the Hupana 2 needs a high level of breathability in order to keep the runner comfortable and help them reach their optimal speed. Its fabric upper is close-knitted throughout most of the shoe in order to block out dirt and debris, yet it still enables a great deal of airflow. It's especially well- ventilated at the forefoot, where hotspots tend to develop the most. As a result, runners feel cooler and dryer while working out or racing.
Comfort
Comfort

Comfort

Hoka One One's shoes are known for being extremely comfortable, and the Hupana 2 is no exception. Its substantial RMAT platform provides comfortable cushioning that carries the runner throughout normal jogs, workouts, and competitions. And its surprising levels of shock absorption and energy transfer work to greatly reduce the amount of join pain the runner would otherwise experience. Its knitted fabric upper and soft textile lining work together to provide a great deal of breathability, while its seamless construction allows the runner to comfortably wear it without socks. The only unfortunate downside is that this model tends to run quite narrow, making it unfit for those with wider feet.
Style
Style

Style

The Hupana 2 looks almost identical to the original model, much to the relief of buyers who loved its sporty style. Its midsole/outsole unit and upper are made from the exact same materials. It also features the same tread pattern, minimal overlays, and lacing system as before. And the brand's name appears once again on the lateral side of the heel. Buyers were also thrilled to see its new colorways, most of which are black paired with a colored midsole. These include white, sky blue, yellow, and orange. Bright blue, red and fuschia models are also available.
Durability
Durability

Durability

Reviews seem to be very mixed when it comes to the Hupana 2's level of durability. Because the shoe's RMAT platform is made from a specialized rubber EVA material, it's able to resist wear and tear much longer than a standard midsole. It also holds up remarkably well against constant use on rough paved roads. Its upper, on the other hand, is another matter. Though most reviews find it to work perfectly fine, several others have noticed that it starts to come loose and show signs of damage relatively quickly.
Protection
Protection

Protection

The Hupana 2's most protective feature is definitely its RMAT platform. Serving as both midsole and outsole, it's engineered to be just as durable as it is responsive. Its textured sole and unique tread pattern provide the runner with a surprisingly strong grip that lets them feel secure as they race. The midsole section keeps the foot properly cushioned and shielded against impact, allowing the runner to feel much less pain throughout the day. And the platform's thickness also safeguards the underfoot against potential road hazards. As for the fabric upper, its close-knit construction keeps dirt and debris out of the foot chamber while still permitting a highly breathable wear.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness

Responsiveness

Since it functions as the shoe's midsole and outsole, the Hupana 2's RMAT platform has to provide the runner with a fair amount of responsiveness. Reviewers have taken note of the amount of shock absorption and energy transfer that they experience during their runs. This also helps to power them forward as they race and enable them to truly reach their greatest speed possible. In addition, it also has an incredible amount of elasticity, enabling it to support the runner and completely follow their every movement while still being able to retain its original shape.
Support
Support

Support

Considering the thickness of its midsole, it's obvious that the Hupana 2 gives runners a very supportive wear. It's durable yet very pliable, allowing runners to feel completely cushioned as they participate in different races at very different speeds. This quality is aided even further by the upper's close-knit construction, padded tongue, and relatively narrow fit. Many reviewers say that they have felt completely supported whether they were racing, working out indoors, or on their feet for hours at work. This also explained the reduced amount of pain that they feel both during the day and after they finally take the shoe off.
Terrain
Terrain

Terrain

Since it's meant to be a racing shoe, the Hupana 2 was designed primarily for use on paved roads. Its durable RMAT platform is textured on the bottom and featured a swirled tread pattern that lets the runner feel completely secure. And the level of breathability offered by its fabric upper makes it very comfortable to wear in both warm and cool weather. According to a small handful of reviewers, it can also perform surprisingly well in wet, snowy, and even icy conditions. However, considering its upper's construction and occasional lack of durability, it's best not to use this particular model while running in extreme weather.
Price
Price

Price

Compared to many of Hoka One One's other running shoes, the Hupana 2 costs noticeably less. Across all online retailers, including Zappos and Running Warehouse, this model can be found for only $115. Most athletic shoes on the market are priced between $120 and $130, making this one just below average. Buyers find this to be even more of a bargain when they consider its high level of comfort and versatile wear. However, its inconsistent fit and lack of durability do turn some buyers away from making a purchase.
Traction
Traction

Traction

All competition shoes require incredible traction, and the Hupana 2 offers runners a surprisingly good grip. At first glance, its unique tread pattern doesn't appear to be as effective as the more angular versions found on most running shoes. However, a number of testers have actually experienced a very secure run while wearing this model. The combination of its deep, curved flex grooves, raised segments, and textured feel enable it to have a firm grasp on paved roads and some uneven surfaces. Some reviewers have also stated that it also functions perfectly fine on wet surfaces.
Flexibility
Flexibility

Flexibility

Despite its thick and highly durable platform, reviewers are impressed with how flexible the Hupana 2 actually is. Its RMAT compound is engineered to have heightened elasticity, allowing it to move along with the runner's foot more easily. This particular quality it desired in racing shoes, as it permits more control, greater ease of movement, and the ability to get a feel for the ground below. The upper's use of knitted fabric and very few overlays, consisting only of the brand's name on the outer heel, also contribute to its pliable wear.
Stability
Stability

Stability

It's clear just from looking at the Hupana 2 that it doesn't have any aggressive stabilizing features. This particular quality comes mostly from the RMAT platform that serves as both an outsole and a midsole. Aside from being durable and flexible, it's also engineered to be highly responsive. Its levels of shock absorption and energy transfer mean that the runner can keep moving along smoothly, allowing them to efficiently and safely reach their optimal speed. Many reviewers also claim that, despite its platform's height, it still provides them with an amazing amount of ground control. And its upper's close-knit construction along the front, sides, and heel enable an even more secure wear, aided by the shoe's traditional lacing system.
Drop
Drop

Drop

Though it has a substantial amount of cushioning, with a 25mm heel height, the Hupana 2's heel-to-toe drop height is only 5mm. Many runners, especially those who race, prefer a low drop running shoe as it gives them better posture and encourages a more natural gait cycle. Though this particular model allows a great deal of ground control, it still provides that cushiony wear that many runners look for.

Its unique tread pattern is able to grip the road underneath and keep the runner completely secure.
