Interview with American Triathlete Linsey Corbin
American Triathlete, Linsey Corbin, is no joke. Her dedication and rigorous training has more than paid off. She has placed 1st in many triathlons including the 2014 Ironman Austria, 2014 Ironman Los Cabos, 2013 Ironman 70.3 Mont Tremblant, 2012 Ironman Arizona and more. She also holds the Ironman American Record of 8:42:42.
We got a chance to talk to Linsey about her training, injury, how she stays motivated and more!
RC: What motivated you to become a professional triathlete?
LC: I was motivated to become a professional triathlete as I was curious how far I could go? I have always had a sense of adventure and I want to try and test my personal, mental & physical limits – triathlon seemed like a great way to do this.
RC: You quit your job in a pet store to follow your dream. What advice or words of support would you give to an athlete that wants to pursue a similar dream, but is hesitant?
LC: You never know until you try! I think the sky is the limit in regards to what we are capable of. If you put your mind to something, you wake up passionate each day about it, anything is possible.
RC: What does your typical training schedule/routine look like?
LC: I work out 7 days a week and take off few days a month depending on where I am at in my training/racing cycle. I also take a few blocks off/time off throughout the year (anywhere from a week to two weeks).
Monday – Focus is on recovery. Easy swim, massage, physiotherapy
Tuesday – 75 – 90’ swim / 2-2.5 hour bike ride / 30-45’ run / 30’ gym
Wednesday – 75 – 90’ swim / 4-6 hour bike ride / 30-45’ run / 30’ gym
Thursday – 75 – 90’ swim / 2-2.5 hour bike ride / 1:15 – 90’ run / 30’ gym
Friday – Focus on recovery. Easy swim, easy ride
Saturday – 60-75’ swim / 4-6 hour ride / 30’ – 1 hour run off
Sunday – 90’-2 hr ride / 1 hour – 2 hour run / 30’ gym
RC: What is one piece of gear that you can’t live (or compete or train) without?
LC: A watch and HRM.
RC: When you first began your career as a professional triathlete, did you imagine that you would not only become a 5 time Ironman Champion, but would also set an American Ironman record? How has this changed how you set goals for yourself as a competitor?
LC: No, I would have never imagined the places triathlon would take me, the people I would meet along the way, and the accolades I would collect. Each time I get to compete in a race or see someplace new, I am so thankful for the opportunity. To me, triathlon has been all about the amazing opportunities – both good and bad, that have been provided to me. My outcome goals have changed throughout my career, but my internal goals have always remained the same: Are you getting the absolute most out of yourself in this moment? The focus has always been on effort vs outcome.
RC: What has been your favorite race so far in your career, and why?
LC: Ironman Austria – both in 2012 and 2014. This was my first trip to Europe (in 2012) and everything was so new to me. I absolutely loved the culture, the people, the scenery blew my mind, and the atmosphere of the race was nothing like I had ever experienced. I returned in 2014 and we had perfect race conditions that allowed me to set a new race record as well as the American Ironman record of 8:42:42.
RC: How do you cope with injury that keeps your from competing, or even training?
LC: I have experienced a number of setbacks in my career, and I have always had the ability to bounce back from them. It is never fun to be sidelined and not be able to compete, train, or do what you love. You have to focus on the things you can do, seek out daily improvements, and never give up faith in your dreams. Injuries require a lot of patience and support from those around you. I know how good it feels to comeback from a setback, and that’s what fuels me in the challenging moments.
RC: What are the three most important things that have led to your success?
LC: I love what I do. Relentless pursuit of excellence. Not being afraid to get back up and try again after failures/disappointments/challenging moments.
